Eulogy

“Mamang Maliit” as he was fondly and lovingly described or referred to by many teaser brods. My kabatch Narciso “Sonny” de Borja, on the contrary, had so many BIG or LARGE items associated with his personality.

First of all he had a pair of appreciative big eyes for beautiful ladies. To the envy and awe of many brods, he always brought MEG, a curly-haired brunette tisay to our Tambayan by the stairs of College of Business Admin building adjacent to the Arts and Sciences building. As he approached the Tambayan, some alaskador brods would produce an ala-falsetto sound of "SSSSSUUUUUUUUT", short for BANSUT. Hangang-hanga naman ako sa kanya dahil hindi siya napipikon. He would just brush it off by saying, "Tang na nyo!" with a smile. "Inggit lang kayo".

He was also large on fashion of the early 70’s. He sported super wide bellbottom double-knits -- not to mention his high and large platform shoes we then called Klugs. His hairstyle had bangs of practically the same length like that of the Beatles and the Monkees.

Going fast forward, I first saw him again in 2013 after so many years at Stonehouse Pub near New Manila, Quezon City where I jammed with our keyboard player with my very first band, Banda Pilipino.

To my surprise he even shrunk more and was already taking in some 'maintenance' meds. We were joined by kabatch Sandy Daza, George Balabag and Ben Ferriols. The second time we spent together exchanging stories was at Caloy Agulto's pub at Ever Gotesco. Again, with Sandy and Ben, and also Billy Sevilla at this time was with us.

He was a very lovable and likeable brod.

One of brother Banz' silk-screened artistries with MALMON says, "ME NOT SMALL ALL OVER! ME GOT SOMETHING BIG... ...ME GOT BIG HEART! WHO ME MALMON?" Brod Banz must have our beloved brod and my kabatch Sonny in mind when he wittingly created these lines.

Paalam, kabatch! I love you, brod Sonny! Regards to our kabatch brod Anthony Subijano in heaven, whom I love just the same.
