Just received a message on my FB from Brod Efren Sabularse that we have lost our Brother Tony Altamarino '69B.
Per Brod Freddy Fajardo, Brod Tony Alta passed away Sept. 1 at 7:15 pm due
to liver cirrhosis. No interment details yet but have requested Brod
Frennie to arrange last rites with Bicol Brods and Sis.
Brod Dutch, check Book of Brotherhood for frat memoirs/pictures of Brod
Tony. Maybe some Brods could send pictures.

Brod Rotsen,
This is sad news indeed. I have not met Tony but I’ve heard lots of
stories about him.
Kindly research more on his exact date of demise, cause of death and

This is indeed another sad news in our UPLB Brotherhood. I have heard of the name of Brod Tony Altamarino and how "die hard" he was, but do not have crystal memory of togetherness in fraternity's affair as I was, most of the time, in Mindanao and Visayas after I graduated from the uplb- college of forestry in 1966.
Brod Ric A., kindly extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved family
of Brod Tony, as I offer my prayers for the eternal rest of his soul.
Brods, let us bombard heaven with our collective prayers for the healing
of our Brothers who are in "sick bay category", and for the eternal rest
of our dear fraternity brothers who have gone ahead of us.
God bless our dear Brotherhood!

Brod Tony Alta is such an extraordinary person. . It was martial law then
and during those trying times Alta represented someone who can be a
leader, he is definitely a good leader in his own right and has the craft
of a military man who was very good in rumbles. During those times a brod
who can withstand the pressure of politics/rumble under the umbrella of
martial law is looked up to by everyone. If you notice the year 1970-71
saw a lot of many GP's. That's true because the frat during those times
was so much affected by the "red" politics and we were plagued with
rumbles left and right. It was during this year that the Apo Labay and
Pepsi triumvurate was born and Tony Alta proved his worth in these rumbles
so he rose steadily even as a young brod like a general. So he rose in a
short time to be a GP. The truth of the matter is in 1975 he was my
"GENERAL" when I was a GP. He steers the frat to victory in all the
rumbles during my GPship. I owe Brod Tony a lot.
Though his GPship was short lived as Pat Roman replaced him.
As a tribute to Brod Tony Alta I have attached a 10-10-10 file photo. He
is next to me in this file photo.

I can attest to Leo's story. I was a new brod then, Batch '70B. The GP was
Eric Punzalan. I remember Tony Alta exuded the air of leadership although
he was only a year ahead of us. As Brods Leo and Vee related in their
stories, during those times the frat was involved in a number of rumbles,
sometimes twice in one semester. And when we got into a confrontation with
one of the members of the "triumvirate", the other two almost always got
into the mix. During Leo's GPship, he referred to Tony as his "General",
the membership knew him as the "Warlord", but he was also a "Peacemaker"
because he brought our adversaries to the table to negotiate a truce (only
when we were ahead in the score). They either feared him or respected him
or both.
The last time I saw Alta was during the 10-10-10 celebration at Splash
Mountain. Rick Bartolome came to me and asked if I knew this white-haired
brod sitting in a chair tilted back scanning the room and looking cool. I
told Rick I couldn't identify him. He told me it was Tony Alta. I looked
again and I could see a black-haired brod in his denim jacket with a
Marlboro in one hand, sipping a beer and then stroking his mustache. I
knew then it was Tony Alta as that was the image of him etched in my mind.
As a UPLB Betan, I'm honored to have shared the same space in time with
our brother, Antonio Altamarino. May his soul rest in peace.

Brod Tony Alta's memories will always lingers on, especially the heroic he
exemplified during the fraternity meet at UPLB Baker hall, the finals
between basketball tournament. It was basically a match that all students
were waiting for and the atmosphere inside Baker's hall was so energized
that it seems that there will be a rumble after the game. I remember that
we are underdog against the upsilon, Tony's uniform was denims pants cut
into shorts and a shirt and his scars showing on his knees. I remember
other brods like Ted Quijano, Manny Castor, the rest I barely remember
there names but the event was hell from the start to the finished, we
fought a battle and it is just that we did not take the gold, but the
spirit that the brods shown that day was so impressive and I will consider
Tony's performance that day was so heroic and and he wants to win no
matter what, a real gungho brother.
His leadership as the GP, the enemy was waiting for his replacement,
because no one wants to tangle with him.
Feel that being drunk almost daily is very normal routine for him and I am
not surprised that he passed away because of liver disease, he have a
colorful life and I am glad that he passed way without suffering a lot, it
was quick, gentle and basically saying to all of us, okey Brods, it is
time for me to rest.
Rest in Peace My dear Brod.

Rest in peace, Brod Tony. A piece of trivia for those who don't know. Tony
Altamarino is Tony Pusag's ninong in the fraternity. I remember one night,
we were under the mango tree outside the Administration building drinking
and smoking with the usual alaskahan. If my memory serves me correctly,
there was me, Sflod, Sonny "Tungro" Tuson, Ric Bartolome, Philip Mercado
and maybe 3 or 4 more brods who I could not recall now. The 2 Tony's got
into a heated argument. Tony Alta asked Sagpay to come with him and they
took off into the darkness of the night for 15 minutes, maybe longer. When
they came back, Sagpay looked like he's been crying and Alta was in his
usual cool demeanor. Whatever happened in the dark was between the
"ninong" and "inaanak".
The passing of these 2 brods is a weird coincidence. May they enjoy the
company of each other now that they are both free of their worldly pains.
Jim G, UPLB '70B

Brod Tony Altamarino stood tall among the brods at the time. He
exemplified the cool and confident brod. May he rest in peace.

I feared this brod when I first met him. I was alone at Coop
tambayan waiting for the brods. He told me, "Brod ka ba, bakit hindi kita
kilala? Maswerte ka di ka dumaan sa akin". Tapos, "Congrats brod".
