It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of Brod
Jojo Alejar’s wife, Eena Arca Alejar. Eena was diagnosed with renal cancer
in February 2014. She was given 2 years to live. Her left kidney had to be
removed, followed by a series of radiation and chemo therapy. She reached
4 years but the disease had spread into her spine, although all other organs
were OK. August and September 2017 and February 2018, she underwent more
operations and radiation treatment. But there was nothing more that could be
done. Eena died at about 10pm today, Phil time. Eena and Jojo were college
sweethearts. Eena, member of Oikos (an org of Human Eco students) would
hang out with the brods, joining us in our drinking sprees, where ever,
when ever. Eena got to know the special bonds that we had and she learned
to appreciate it. Jojo and Eena got married early in their lives and had 3
children - Brod John’05a LB, Sis Rocel’07a LB, and Ria Angela, my
ina-anak.
I remember that our group, when we were just starting to have our own
families, had an overnight family get-together at a beach resort in
Calatagan, Batangas. While the brods were doing the usual things, inuman
and kantyawan, Eena gathered all the wives and indoctrinated them on what
it is to be a Betan’s wife. She told them that Beta Sigma is priority when
it comes to their husbands! That their partners in life have an endearing
dedication to each other. Sometimes expect them to cancel dates on you or
call in sick from work just to be with brods. But their husband brods will
take good care of family. I grieve with my kumpareng Brod Jojo and the
Arca-Alejar clan.

Kumpareng Brod Jojo,
I hope you are doing well and gaya ng nasabi ko sayo over the phone, my
deepest condolence sa yo at kila Rocel, Inno, and Rina. Also please send
my deepest condolences to Oset and the other members of Eena's family. I
am deeply saddened by the passing of Eena. I share your loss sa pagpanaw
ni Eena dahil napakalapit din ni Eena sa akin at alam ko sa maraming mga
brods even noong mga residente pa tayo (Super L, Ben Medel, William, Ambo,
Mario, Ador, Ric E. etc.) and afterwards.
Eena always had a special bond with us dahil palagi din siyang fixture sa
Coop noon, always by your side, and with the brods too, especially noong
panahon na Hepe ka. Laughing, joking, sharing stories and being deeply
involved with the daily events and happy times sa Coop at sa mga
jug-a-lug, bonfires, etc. Higit sa lahat, I think what endeared her to the
brods was her quiet understanding of you and her gracious appreciation of
how important Beta Sigma was to all of us and to our lives. She understood
our cause. There were actual times times that I really felt that if she
could have, she would have wanted to become a Beta Sigman. She shared that
same passion and die-hard spirit that I am sure radiated from you. As a
young resident brod, I shared a sense of pride that not only were you our
GP but we also had a first lady (by your side) who was also a campus
figure and personality in her own right and who actually hung out and
broke bread with us sa Coop.
Na-a-alala ko rin yung mga panahon (pagkatapos ng hindi lang minsan na
jug-a-lug) na kahit dis-oras ng gabi when we used to walk sa Crossing at
ihahatid ka namin papunta doon sa boarding house where she lived -- she
would always have a warm, welcome for us (kahit mga lango na lahat). At
hindi rin minsan mo kaming na-i-hatid na lulan nung puti niyang kotse back
in the day, which was a testament to her kind generosity.
I remember also very well how warmly we were welcomed by Eena and her
family many times doon sa kanilang bahay sa Cavite City, together with you
and other brods of the time (Super L, Ben Medel, William V, Ambo, Ador,
Mario, Uning, at marami pang ibang brods). We were even there noong
ikinasal kayo. One memorable occasion for me and I am sure for many brods
as well ay noong kunin mo kaming mga Ninong ni Rocel (my first ina-anak).
During that occasion, we also shared a special moment as we were welcomed
by her Brod father (Captain Arca, Phil Constabulary) and how he regaled us
with his experiences at yung mga kwento sa mga contemporaries niya, like
Pros Crescini.
Eena will be missed. I will always remember her as warm, smiling, generous
and beautiful person beside you, supporting and understanding and being
with you. Once again, Kumpareng Brod Jojo, even as we are separated by
continents, please know that I am with you in your time of sorrow. More
than all of this, I know that Eena is at peace now and smiling down upon
you and everyone as she looks down from the heavens.
Again, please give my condolence and my warm regards as well to your kids
esp. Rocel (my ina-anak), Inno , Ria and the rest of the Arca clan.

Continuing the narratives of Dutch’78 and Chito’84, Eena, my wife, was
President of Oikos and Women’s Dorm at the time we met. The brods ang
nanligaw para sa akin. I would take her to the brods after our dinner date
as I was not a good conversationalist. Roses were sent to her through
Erwin ”Bubbles” Salud’82, a new brod then, hehe. And when I proposed, Jun
”Sakyu” Ramos’81 prepared a bonfire in the forestry grounds complete with
a note where to find the matches, kerosene and rose. She became part of
the COOP Tambayan in the mid ‘80s in spite of her many close friends’
advise to keep away from me as walang kinabukasan and part ng mga
rambolistang Beta Sigma. Well, but the brods were much behaved in front of
her and she grew close to many. In a way, maybe Eena helped temper the
brods when I was the GP in ‘85-‘86 for we had 2 full semesters with some
incidents but zero rumbles vs. any fraternity, the first time in many,
many years.
During our wedding day at the post reception in Eena’s house in Cavite
City, there was a lot of brods including Boy Vera’64 and Uncle Xam
Maligalig’77. One round for the brods would be equal to 24 bottles of SMB.
Eena was game but after 5-6 rounds, my father-in-law bellowed - ”May
honeymoon pa ang mga yan”, hehe...and so we all had fun moving out sa
convoy to my honeymoon!
She chose all brods para sa abay and ninongs to my kids: Theodore
Tongacan’79, William Valdez’81, Mike Alcasid’79, Mark Nubla’79, Carlo
Dimayuga’79, Jun Ramos’81, Greg Villanoy’81, Alex Cardenas’80, Ric
Escobin’79, Ambo Lapis’80. Tama si Chito Reynoso’84 - she was part of the
group. And sa mga kumpil: Tomsak Criador’81, Joel Paredes’73, Dante
Agulto’73, Cris Michelena’73, Mon Aquino’98.
Eena welcomed the thought of my eldest John joining the brotherhood, as
well as Rocel becoming a Sigma Betan. Of course, she feared the initiation
process where we were known for kahit alam niya non-physical na.
Thank you, brods. The support to me during the wake was overwhelming.
Residents from UPD & UPLB went, as well as Manila South, Cavite Assemblies
and National Assembly brods. Kumpareng brods like Carlo Dimayuga, who I
have not seen for many years, visited.
I would have forgotten how close Eena was to the brods then & that in
essence is what I will miss, the understanding of the wife who chose to
support what we hold dearest, our brotherhood.
