As reported by Brod Dave Ramos'64, former Basilan governor Brod Louie Alano'62 "Moonriver" passed away on Sunday, Sept 24.
According to Brod Bing Garcia'64, Brod Louie had a fatal heart attack. Interment is this coming Saturday, Sept 30, at the Episcopal Church at Isabela, Basilan. Wake is at Brod Louie's home in Basilan.
Photo of Brod Louie during his college days, atop his motorcycle. Notice the UP Beta Sigma seal on his motorcycle's tank. Brod Louie was Aggie GP in 1963-1964.
Rest in peace, Brods Ogie & Louie.

Another "joule" gone.
Will be missed by all.

I never met Brod Louie Alano but his name is legendary in the UPLB
community. In fact, the definition of an alumnus was bent to
accommodate him in the UPLB Alumni Association. I have not verified
this but it seems he only finished 4 semesters in LB. So since then,
one could be a bona fide member of UPLB AA if you have gone through 4
semesters in UPLB as a registered student.
Rest in peace, Brod Louie.

Brod Louie was a typical Beta Sigman - smart and ruggedly handsome.
During our time in the UPLB College of Forestry in the mid 60s, the
Aggie and Forestry Brods had different chapters. I could recall that
during my first year in the fraternity in 1964, the membership of the
Forestry Brods had reached more than 70. I assume that the Aggie
Brods on the same period, which was then under the popular
leadership of Brod Louie as GP, hadmore numbers than the Forestry
Brods.
It was also during this period that the Forestry and Aggie Brods
became much closer because the GP then of the Forestry Brods was
another Chabacano, also from Basilan, in the person of Querico Tan.
Moreover, the then MIS of the Sigma Beta Sorority in the UPCA
was another Chabacana from Zamboanga del Norte - Sister Elvie
Dalogdog.
We will miss our dear Brother Louie but his memory remains - a joyful
and strong, united brotherhood.
Rest in Peace, Brod Louie!

Thanks, Rene, for these wonderful reminiscing about Louie Alano and
the Basilan Chavacano brods. Since I joined the fraternity in 1970 in
UP Diliman , I really wanted to meet Louie (and Dick Brown ) whenever
I went home to Isabela, Basilan but was not able to.
I always see Art de Vera in fraternity and Basilan reunions, and
last April chanced upon Mando Dayrit and Rene Tiamzon in our high
school grand reunion in Isabela. The last time I saw them was in the
early 70s during our dual meet in Los Baños.
It delighted me to know that in 1964, the fraternity heads of both Los
Banos Aggie and Forestry were Basilan Chavacanos although this is the
first time I heard of Querico Tan ( he might be from Zamboanga ).
Brods from Basilan are the late Richard Jacaria,
Onofre Grino, late Louie Alano, Dick Brown, Art de Vera, Mando
Dayrit, Rene Tiamzon and the late Forestry brod, Maximino " Blue Max"
Generalao who was my cousin. So far until now, I am the only Diliman
brod coming from Basilan. Unfortunately, I have not heard of new brods coming from Basilan.
Again, regards to you, Brod Rene.

To Brod Togi Igot,
Brod Boygee Ganza is also from Basilan and a UP Diliman Brod and was a
long time protégé of Brod Johnny Chuiten in Kungfu and both stayed at
Area 11 and I sometimes stayed with them.

When I joined the frat, Brod Louie just finished his term and was
succeeded by Brod Gabriel "Gabby"Viterbo, another good looking Betan
mestizo from Capiz.
In my description and close association with him, Brod Louie is a
rugged yet refined Betan. He was very conscious (?) with his health
that he always smoked his filtered Salem cigarettes with another
filter where you can insert your cigarette. That was his trademark I
think. In the morning at the Coop, we always ordered the famous
arrozcaldo of Tita Fely and Brod Louie always made sure that his
arrozcaldo had a fried egg on top. Not many knew this but many Brods
copied this from him when they ate their arrozcaldo. To top it, he
always ordered a big glass of the very freshly delivered milk from
DTRI (Dairy Training Institute Dept) to end his breakfast ritual. His
last drink was a "matapang na kape". I remembered Brod Mel Gulfin, my
chavacano batchmate, said upon hearing Louie's order... Tol, I will
just order a "Duwag na kafe". We laughed but we always forgave him as
he was also a chabacano. One time Mel got mad at a Brod, he said
"ilulundag kita sa bintana" meaning he would throw him out of the
window. As usual, laughter ensued.
Brod Louie never drank beer in a glass as far as I knew. When he
opened the bottle, he would get a napkin and wiped clean the top and
that's where he drank his cold beer. He loved to play POKER FORTY FOUR
at the Umali subdivision frat house although my batchmate, Brod
Douglas "Dougie" Mondonedo, often times beat him. By the way, he was
one of the many Brods who always had money in his pocket to lose in
the poker game.
I was one of the fortunate ones who Brod Louie invited to ride his
Gilera Motorcycle to visit his Aunt Lydia Alano Villegas, wife of the
late Mayor Antonio Villegas and who is the oldest brother of UP
NORTH's David "Dave " Villegas. From the looks of it, Brod Louie was a
favorite nephew of Lydia Alano who is the younger sister of his
father.
Brod Louie stayed at the Ynalvez dormitory and it was a very famous
place that you would hear from many Brod's stories. The Brods who
occupied the place with him were Dick Brown, son of the former Mayor
of Basilian and cousin of the famous actress, Josephine Estrada, Art
De Vera, Vic Pizarro, Teopisto Villanueva, Antonio "Toti" Lugod and
more that I can't recall. They were called "The Ynalvez Dogs" for
reasons only the Brods knew.
These memories of Brod Louie will always be with me and most of the
Brods who knew him. Farewell my brother. You had a good run.
