Eulogy

by Bernie Bantegui, UPD'68a

Walter and I go back a long way. We were classmates in U.P. Preparatory High School. We would have lunch at Philam Canteen at U.N. Ave., attend P.E. class on Saturdays here in Diliman and spend hours at the "bilyaran" near his home at Mapa High School, Sta. Mesa or Morong St. near our house at Sta. Catalina in Q.C.

In 4th year H.S., Walter became a PMT Officer, he earned the rank of Sargeant. It was his turn to give orders for missions to NCOs. Missions such as giving chocolates and roses and carrying the bag of his crush were all intended to elicit positive response from his crush. His closest rival to this girl was another classmate. One evening after some bottles of beer and gin at Ed Rivera's flat he had an opportunity to confront this classmate. I can't exactly remember details of that night ... Best to leave it as that :-)

When we got to College in U.P. as entrance scholars it was only natural for us to join the fraternity of choice, The U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity a.k.a. Brotherhood of Scholars. We drew our courage and resolve to face the Masters and hurdle the initiations from each other. The band of Prepian Brothers are Ed Rivera, Lee Manikan, Paeng Ochoa, Rick Rey, Ago Romero, Walter and myself. We were the biggest batch of Prepians that entered the Beta Sigma at that time. Like other Prepian Brods Gamy M, Teddy R, Ding C, others before us, we actively recruited and sponsored graduating Prepian batches after us to the Frat. We were followed by the Panzer 69A Batch of Boyet Fernandez, Rey Bantegui ,Claro Sta. Maria, Carlo Gervacio, Rolly Balingit, Luis Guañio and Ross Fernando. Walter had his trade-mark 180 degree slap "maririndi ka talaga pag tama sa iyo". Walter strikes fear sa mga amuyong when he did the rounds.

Walter honed his Martial Arts skills sa Frat. He quickly earned the Blackbelt. He and Kabatch Mel de Santos engaged in full contact sparring in exhibition matches. The two were worthy protagonists. But they were also die-hard Betans - 24K Betan Icons. As in martial arts, Walter always tried to excel in any sports he engaged in from billiard to golf.

Although we were batchmates in High School and the Frat in later years he got closer to my brother Rey, Bobby (Ahas) Manansala, Mike Cruz, Oca (Pucay) Pasamba and Ike Araneta among others as they often had pot sessions in the house. The morning after these sessions meant an empty fridge and the group still having their pyschedelic dreams. They called themselves Lonely Hearts - front acts in "Haranas" at the women's dorms.

Being Kabatch we kept contact with each other since he came back from the U.S. in 1986. We picked up where we left off. We reminisced our high school days and our experiences and misadventures during our U.P. days.

Allow me to share a classmates (Leila's) thought on Walter... "Even knowing how long ago it has been since our high school days, in my mind Walter remains the cheerful, active, most of the time naughty boy I know. The last time I recall that we were together, with some other classmates was when he hosted us for a wonderful lunch in his province. We were stuffed with mostly seafood that were just harvested and what struck me was his eager and genuine hospitality! He was so attentive and happy to take us around. We enjoyed it so much that we kept planning on doing it again. But, alas, that will not happen anymore! We will surely miss him...not just for the free lunch, but for all that he has been to all of us, a true friend!

We last met in Feb. to celebrate our Batch Anniversary. Looking back I can see that pained smile on his face. I sensed that he was struggling but he preferred to keep it from us. I respected his privacy. I did not want to pry on his personal life. I could only hope given the right break he would manage to get back on his feet. As always the maybes and should haves come as after thoughts. Maybe I could have done or should have done something. Knowing you Walter you would have preferred to keep an image of a dashing, fun-loving guy. Farewell my friend. Thank you for the memories. We take comfort in the belief that you are in a better place now and in good company with great friends who have gone ahead (Mel, Abet, Butch, Lee, Mon, Lito, Gamy, others).

Messages

Just received a shocking news....
Brod Walter Navarro, UP Diliman passed away last night?

My prayers and condolence to his family and loved ones.

Walter was among my top students in the UP Beta Sigma School of Martial Arts. He was among the selected few and together with
the late Brod Mel de Santos, late Cedric Gloria and Bing Garcia has helped project the image of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity through unselfish efforts in conducting martial arts demonstrations in the various high school campuses, in fraternity sponsored events, etc.

He was a smart and persistent student whose competitive nature is only shown when challenged. He was a Black Secrets SOMA black belt seminarian and together with the late Brod Mel De Santos competed in the first BSSOMA sponsored Karate Federation of the Philippines (KAFEPHIL) in Sorsogon in 1971. He has sought advancements in martial arts in the US.

About a couple of years back he sent me an e-mail that reads:" The UP Beta Sigma School of Martial Arts has taught him more than he can want more with other masters that he has met in the US." " The teaching methods of our school is way more oriented to learning to teach than to fight." He also sincerely thanked me for all those years that I was patient and strict with him. He also told me that he should have pursued me more during those years. He further told me that the style of the UP Beta Sigma School of Martial Arts can stand against any style.... I emphasized with him that it was the 'Chiuten Style' that I had taught him.

This is one of my lifetime nostalgic moments wherein a student has given a sincere credit to his teacher. In behalf of all the students and instructors of the UPBSSOM and the BSSOMA our sincere condolence to the family.

May you have peace in the kingdom of God.

Cheers!

Just read from Brod Noli Nolasco's FB account about a minute ago that Brod Walter Navarro passed away in Q.C.

Allegedly, he suffered a heart attack inside the bathroom.
For you and all our brods' info. This is a shocking news indeed!

brod ollie i am trying to verify this news myself...i got a post of terio's demise. can anyone verify this?

Got the initial call from Brod Bernie Bantegui, and Kabatch Dan Bautista says Brod Danny Paz is now looking for the "body".

Brod Art Atega has also asked for verification.

We'll wait for updates. Sana naman false flag lang to! Kawawa naman at wala yatang relatives si Brod Walter dito.

=========================================

How is it confirmed, Brod Noli… It's something that a brod wouldn't one to believe. Walter was among the few alumni who kept faith that we wouldn't die in our Diliman campus and stayed along with the Magnificent Seven (Raffy H, Mandingo, Carl Zabat, Philip Marfil, Adrian Policarpio, et al) in increasing our numbers.

He will always be the ebullient, energetic, and service-driven brother I've always known!

I hope the efforts of Brods Bernie Bantegui, Dan Bautista, and Danny Paz will result in some form of "confirmation".

All the best.

Walt and I got together in late April when I visited Manila.
He has an older brother Errol who resides in Indy.

"Talked to Jesty Salvo via Viber. Walter's friend and business partner Henry Chua is in contact with Walter's relatives from Bataan, making funeral arrangements. Will be advised at the earliest. Jesty and three other friends from Indiana: Henry Chua, Marvin Ross, and Tierry Garcia have been taking care of Walter lately. Jesty is a U.P. Vanguard. Noli was his upper classman/brod."

A sad day for the brotherhood!!!

I am deeply saddened by this news. I couldn't sleep last night hoping that this wasn't true. Walt was a good friend. He made it a point to keep in touch throughout the years and even visited me here in the Bay Area several times. We were close during our resident days. He used to teach me kung fu techniques.

We used to hang out together at either Rey Bantegui's or Oca Pasamba's place along with Ahas and get stoned out of our wits. And when we were all stoned, he would do the dragon tiger in the wee hours of the morning. He was a lot of fun and a very enthusiastic brod. Had a unique voice. He was the one who taught me that song "No fair at all" by the association. A favorite among the brods at the time. A loyal and true betan. Alaskador din.

Last time I saw him was when we went home in 2012. He joined Tanya and I for lunch at Greenbelt. It was a heartwarming meeting. As always.

To Walt, I raise my glass and celebrate your life. Rest now my brother. I will always cherish your memory and miss you.

Till we meet again....

Terio's life was the UP Diliman Campus. Even when he used to live in Guadalupe, h e often times slept over at our place in Area 1 instead of going home. When most of the brods who weree his contemporary have gone to pursue their respective professional careers, Walter still remained on Campus, nurturing the resident Brods especially during turbulent times. I hope the news was not real.

His unselfish dedication to the Fraternity deserves the highest recognition from all of us.

Walter was staying with an old friend from Indianapolis. It was Henry who found his lifeless body in the bathroom. They (together with security guard with consent of building owner) had to force open the door.

His body now lies in a morgue in QC. They need a next of kin or an authorization from a family member for his release. Another friend from Indianapolis is in communication with Walt's brother in the USA. Once the authorization letter is received here the UP Diliman chapter (Diliman Residents) can then prepare a proper memorial service and last rite for Walt. We can do a service at Balete@Kamias where Walt hangs out. Or, wherever the brods feel appropriate.

Walt's last communication with his family in the USA was in 1986. His brother sent word that Walt should be laid to rest with his mom and dad in the USA. I was informed that he will most likely be cremated and his ashes brought to the USA to his family.

Mga Kabatch, this is what I hv gathered from Walter's Indiana buddy (Jesty Salvo) who broke the news of Walter's passing via Viber: Walter's friend and business partner Henry Chua with whom Walter was staying found Walter slumped in the shower - it is presumed Walter had a massive heart attack. Henry is in contact w/ Walter's relatives from Bataan making funeral arrangements.

Wl be advised of it at the earliest. Jesty and three other friends from Indiana (Hoosiers) Henry Chua, Marvin Ross and Tierry Garcia hv been taking care of Walter lately. Walter has no immediate family in Manila - his elder brother Errol is based in Indiana.

Let us pray for the eternal repose of his soul.

He was there for us (80s and 90s) all the time. He would be funny, and weird and pushy with regards projects he wanted us to execute on (Chariot Race is what I can remember), and we would talk about him a lot, mainly on how to properly say we were too embarrassed to do it (not cool!) hahahaha... He only wanted us to be more visible in campus and recruit more for the frat regardless of the "unconventional" projects hehehehe. But he succeeded somewhere else. he succeeded in making us love him and grow fond of him and welcome him all the time in the tambayan. Tito Walt was one of a kind. Rock and roll

Tito Waltz! you will always always be remembered."

In high school, I was Wes (Unseld) and he was Walt ('Clyde the Glide' )Frazier. We refused to 'grow up'.
We outran those Betans at Vinzons Hall when they spotted me wearing a Beta Sigma jacket when we were just seniors in high school. We were kidnapped together as amuyongs and battered brutally by a sadistic master- yet we kept our resolve.
We left for Indiana at the same time(1972) - Walt settling in Indianapolis and I in South Bend.
He would surprise me with his frequent visits to South Bend . His presence energized me and helped me through my tough years

as a self supporting and struggling student in a foreign land.
I wanted to spend time with my high school friend/batchmate when I visited Manila in April this year.
To my surprise he showed up in a high school gathering (as he was a 'no show' in our high school gatherings lately).

After dinner, he took me back to my hotel. It was just him and I - we didn't talk much about the old times-we mostly stared

at each other - smiling and enjoying our wine. He was at peace with himself. It was 3 AM- time for him to go.
We embraced each other - I wanted to walk him back to his car. He refused- he said he was fine.
I know.

Walter is batch 68.

He became a Betan a few months before I was born. But for me and my generation of latter 80s brods, panahon namin si Walter. He's an 80s brod. Our time wouldnt have been the adventure it was without Walter Navarro. Our story of the 80s includes the indefatigable Walter.

How could he not have been an 80s brod?

Did he not, like the rest us, drain every single peso from his wallet time and again on the booze of the night? Did he not as we did, time and again call a brod's bedroom 'home'? Did he not know all our dogs names? And crazy project ideas! Didnt he have his fair share of them? Wasn't his name always present in the attendance sheet of General Meetings? We'd have lunch at the UP COOP, some bopis or beefsteak. He got into a fight there once when we werent with him. Some shmuck he hadn't seen before. The boys searched for that mutha for three days intending to open up his head. All we found was a car that might have been his. We lit it up. Hopefully he'd come to us. He didn't . But Walter was getting a kick out of all this cat and mouse hunting. Just like he was getting a kick out of attending the 88B initiations. He had this 'buntot pagi' and was smacking anything that moved. 'Parang neolite ito!' he would proclaim. Later he said it was like back when he was young. We looked at him strangely.

Was Walter one of the accomplices in the Sigma Beta vs Ladies Corp hullaballoo of 87-88? No way. He was more like one of the ringleaders. An instgator! Oh man were we entertained. Walang sinabi rambol!

Didnt he talk the same language as us? Wasnt it always about recruitment? Sure many wanted to help. Quite a few were standup brods. Some werent though. Some didnt like it when another idea was chosen above theirs. Sure there was trouble. Wasnt he ALWAYS on our side?

Didn't we ride the IKOT together? Like the time after an all nighter. The girls in the jeepney were giggling. Walter had split his pants and his balls were hanging out. I spotted em. In a hushed tone I said, "nakalabas betlog mo bratha". He says, "Oh no." out loud, squeezes his legs together and smiles at the girls. They giggle some more.

Walter never talked about himself. His stories were about others. He talked about these brods with such fondness, such respect, such reverence. How could they not be heroes to us as well? All we knew about the 60s brods came from Walter's stories! We knew all the names: Ahas, Judz, Bantegui, Jacol, Ben Abon, Chako, Bakers, Enching, Torch- many brods whom when we finally met would think, "siya pala yun".

Werent we hungry together? Thirsty? Sated? Slaked? Down? Victorious? Sorrowful? Ecstatic?

Walter is definetly 80s. Our time.

But where are you now brod? You went ahead too soon. There are still things to do. Adventures to be made. Why so soon? We are still young arent we? Arent we young forever?

I guess not.

Another sad news, indeed, for the fraternity.

Yes dear brothers. It is confirmed that Brod Walter Navarro passed away.
We all did not want this confirmation. Up to the last minute, we were all hoping that this is not true.
Brod Atty Boyet Fernandez went to Camp Crame yesterday afternoon to locate the body at the CIDG crime lab but was told that SOCO QC should know where the body lies.
The name Tierry Garcia, a close friend of Walter since Indiana days, surfaced as our link to his whereabouts.
Brod Bernie Bantegui gave us Tierry’s number. i called up brod ret general rico salapong to coordinate with CIDG.
Brod Boyet was referred to a small funeral parlor in Kamias and he confirmed that his body is positive.
He then went to Camp Caringal to inquire re the release of the body from the funeral parlor. he was told that Tierry Garcia presented an email to the authorities allowing him to claim brod Walt’s remains.
We will be updated hopefully by today. brod bernie is in close contact with Tierry. Tierry assured us that he will take care of the transfer to a much better place. we will keep you posted.

(thank you brod boyet for taking time doing the legwork and brod bernie being in touch with Tierry. thank you OBBF for breaking the news)

May I add that Beloved Founder Brod Rico Arranz is one of the Founding Fathers of UP Barkada. And when Brod Justice Raul Victorino is able to play, he ends up being the emcee. So the fraternity is well represented in the UP Barkada Golf tournaments. Since the passing of Brod Rico, and now, Brod Walter, I am not sure if we are at all represented in the Barkada Golf tournaments.

I would like to add that Brod Walter, whenever he could represent UP Beta Sigma in the monthly UP Barkada Golf Tournament

(in the 2 occasions that I was able to play) took home either the class A or Class B trophy. Brod Walter did us proud in the UP Barkada tournaments !

If I may humbly propose that, one hole, in the upcoming 1st Brod Rico Arrranz Golf tournament be named after Brod Walter.

Cheers to Brod Walter !!

Condolences to brod Walter's family. He visited me back when i was living in Totonto (@ late 80s) and we hung out with a bottle of whiskey. I recall his great surprise when i reminded him of his super shocked look when i conned him into doing his Hung Sing kata for my "grampa" at the old (Diliman) gym across from the pool by the chapel, especially when i told him he was performing in front of my teacher's teacher( brod Johnnys teacher and later my teacher, GM LAO KIM).

Rest in peace brod Walt.

We remember the fun times with Walter and his funny personality as well- whether it was on purpose or otherwise. But seriously, I've always believed that Walter's presence back then created a different upbeat tempo and a positive dynamic, both key to us thriving as residents and engineering a revival. I dare say that without Walter, things may have been very different. We might have been much weaker. I think Manny and Philip would share my sentiments as GPs of that age.

80's indeed, I remember brod walter when he was at the tambayan at bagong salta pa mula sa US. English na may american accent. "I'm from Indiana..." mangha pa mga residente nun at bihira yung may alumni na galing abroad at spokening dollar pa.

Siempre, kami being good residents we would always support the brod over bottles of gin courtesy of tito waltz. We actually got around to placing posters of the project near the tambayan area to make sure that he sees it, when in actuality hanggang dun lang talaga kami nagpost kasi we didn't have the heart to tell him that the project wasn't feasible back then, besides the fact that he kept the residents happy. There, was this other idea of brod walter nung 90's ata yun o early 2000's, yung chariot race. I even saw a sample chariot in the tambayan, classic walter. If you really think about it those projects are really brilliant and that we were just too slow to catch on to what he had in mind. He was still the same walter as a resident in the 60s and 70s as he was with us in the 80s just mellower, I guess.

Last I heard of the brod, he was a golf guru, then he just lost touch sa mga brods. Sad to hear that another icon of the frat has gone, sana magkita kayo nina brod mel at brod dolf to again raise a ruckus wherever you are. . . Like the brods before you, you will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Our brod, our daddy, our tito walter navarro.

Walter and I, together with Bernie Bantegui, Lee Manikan and Paeng Ochoa were in the same senior section in high
school at U.P. Prep in Padre Faura. He was the one who game me the nickname "Amang" because of all the crazy jokes
I used to tell him. All of us joined the Fraternity at the same time with oher Prepians Judz Rey and Ago Romero.

Back in the late 60's when Brod Walter (Terio or Ter as we called him) would stay over at my place, he would always
talk about the older Brods (Ely Santiago, Popoy Castaneda, Eli Aglibut, etc) who would still go to the tambayan and
be with the brods. These Brods will go to the tambayan, share experiences with the younger brods and help the frat
in campus activities. He would always say to me "I hope we could still go to the tambayan and help the residents when
we are that old. Can we be as panatiko to the frat as these brods". Well, I guess we know the answer from Brod Raffy,
Jigs and Dennis email.

Back in Dec, 1974 Walter and I drove (he did all of the driving) from Indianapolis for 19 hrs going to Byonne, New
Jersey in his 2 seater Saab to attend the wedding of one of our high school batchmates. He picked me up at the airport,
at 12 midnight, stopped by his friend Tiery's place to have coffee and then drove off. During these 19 hours we
talked about the good old times. The funny thing was that before the ceremony started, the groom asked Walter if
he could go and get sodas/drinks for the reception. He went alone because I cannot go with him because I was the
best man. Being unfamiliar with the area, when he got back the ceremony was finished. He told me "Amang, sa lahat
ng kasalan na pinuntahan ko, ito lang ang hindi ko nakita. At ang layo pa ng pinangalingan natin."

The last time I saw him was February this year for our batch reunion and at the jazz show at one of his friends
in Kamuning. We always make it a point to see each other when I go to Manila.

Ter, I will always cherish the days when we were seniors at UP Prep, during our resident days at Diliman and the 3 times
we saw each other in the USA "at pinasikatan mo ako. Pati and mga kaibigan mong kano ay bilib na bilib sa iyo."
When I get married in the afterlife you will still be my best man but make sure that you'll be there. I know you will be
happy there with kabatch Mon Agulto, Butch Landrito, Conde Dancel, Mel de Santos, Lee Manikan and the other Brods.

My wife Zeni and I wish to express our condolences to Walter's Family. We thank you for sharing him with us. He will
surely be missed but not forgotten.

A moment in time with Walter

by Norman Bituin

In late '73 after grad school and working briefly in the government, I emigrated to Canada. A few months in Vancouver, I decided to move to Toronto via the US interstates. After stops in SF and LA, I was on my cross-country to the East Coast in my Toyota SW driving a stick shift with one good hand. (Fractured my left in SF - good it was not my driving and gear-shifting hand).

I had been on the road for 4 days sleeping in rest areas. I didn't have Walter's address or phone. But I knew his father was a medical doctor in Indy so I figured his dad must be listed. I checked the White Pages in a phone booth. I lucked out. (Remember this was before cell phones, the internet or GPS). I found his place, but being a Friday night Walt was out partying. He couldn't believe who was in his bed when he came. A nice bed and hot food felt good after nights lying inside a sleeping bag at the back of the car with only soda and cookies for eats. It was a "relaxing" R&R weekend. Booze and weeds. Crap, I didn't even smoke - but got to chill with Walt. (And yes, I inhaled). When it was time for me to leave, he escorted me in his Saab to the interstate.

At the First International Alumni Homecoming in Dec. 1990 chaired by Founder Rico Arranz, Walt and I met again. As the 80's brods had described, this was when Walt was immersed deep in their midst and suggesting "unconventional" projects, as Jig Reyes said. Walt had mentioned the "Chariot Race" to me too. He attended Butler U in Indy and that's where that idea came from, which was a tradition among the fraternities. Let me digress a bit. Walt had joined a frat at Butler U and he said that Ahas was giving him a hard time about it. As I remember him explain - "Wala 'yon, brod. Hindi naman gaya ng Beta Sigma. Bait ng mga masters ng sinabi ko na black belter ako." Anyway I looked up the Chariot Race at Butler to see what was on Walt's mind.

At a party hosted by Billy Gurango for the UP SoCal families after the homecoming, Walt took the time and the opportunity to bring a number of residents so we could meet meet them. In 1989, in addition to the $500 open university scholarship started in 1987, the "Southern California Chapter Recruitment and Membership Fund" (aka "Let There Be Light!" Fund) was established to help the residents in their recruitment efforts and augment their numbers. I was editing the "Los Angeles Betan" and featured Walt and the residents in an article. The 80's brods might recognize themselves in the newsletter excerpt (also with the enlarged photo) below.

"Walter's Army"

Like Arnold Palmer's golf fans known as "Arnie's Army", so it was for Walter and the 80's residents.

So long, Walt. Remember: no weeds in heaven!
