Wife Andie's text to me....

"Orly passed away at 1:32 today"

Brod Orly is now at peace, free from pain. Let us pray for his soul.

Brod Dutch, I met Brod Orly when he came to me to work in the Art Section of the Science Education Center, together with Brods Jess Abrera, Pol Moral, Wahley Rodriguez and Pete San Pedro. Willie Nepo was with me already not yet a Betan. A year later Tony Frio asked me for a Fine Arts brod to work at DTRI and Orly grabbed the opportunity. At Los Banos he became active as a Betan and gave his talent not only as an artist but as an actor. He was an exemplary Betan. He established himself with the community, got married, had chidren and together with his wife established a Montessori school (2 actually). I met him last at the First International Homecoming. We have been in touch thru our web ever since. I know he is in remission and expected this event in his life. I cannot express in words the emptiness I feel in his passing.

I shall forever cherish my association with our dear Brod Orly N. Magistrado’64.

During my resident years, our contemporary Sigma Betans were always charmed by Orly and his buddy Ric Bartolome’73. May isang Sis na lagi nilang gustong i-date pero hindi pwede hanggang hindi ako kasama, hahaha. At the International Rice Research Institute, Orly was in the Training Center group. Again, he was one of the stand outs there because of his charming personality and demeanor. Ric Bartolome would later recruit Orly to join the USAID, based in Makati. Sabi nga ni Jojo, sarap ng good time namin nuon.

There was a time Jojo contracted Orly to prepare training module for Jojo’s AgChem company. Since it was about rice production, kinuha ako ni Orly to help out in the preparation. Orly paid me well for that side line. It was at their new home at Lopez Avenue, near their Montessouri school, where we prepared the training materials. His ‘man cave’ was so much in order, walang kalat!

We reconnected again in America. I was delighted when he phoned me to tell that he and Andie were in Hercules, California. He proudly told me that his son Joam is now also a brod.

They moved to Southern California where he and I worked on The UPLB Beta Sigma Book of Brotherhood. It was Orly’s unique artistry that gave the book the wow factor. Sabi nga ni Wally Rodriguez’63, "as far as the book is concerned, the pages are well laid out. whoever did your layout and design knows what he is doing. well done indeed.”

But it was during my collaboration with Orly that I came to know how caring he was. During my stressful moments worrying whether the Book could be completed on time, he always assured me that everything will turn out fine.

We continued to keep in touch. He gave me comforting words when he learned I got laid off from work. He would regularly call me to ask how I am doing.

I was completely dumb founded when he calmly told me he was diagnosed with cancer. Lesson learned: he wanted me to tell the brods to take time out to have regular medical check up.

Johnny Kool Singh'68 gave him the 2015 calendar project to work on to take Orly's mind off the painful medical procedures that he'll undergo. Still he was able to work on designs for ads that BBB members contributed for various Beta Sigma affairs.

About 2 months ago I got another call from Orly. He said he decided to go home to Los Banos, where he'll spend his 'end of days.'
A few weeks ago he told me they were leaving on July 13 and would call me before he leaves.

Last Friday, July 10, I visited Orly in the hospital. I jokingly told him I came to see him because I was expecting his phone call. He smiled. Before I left, I hugged and whispered to him, "thanks for everything".

My tears rolled down for our Brod and dear friend Orly. His last picture will always smile upon us who delighted in his undying services to the frat. His Los Banos days will always be remembered as the best years of his life. He never failed to smile and it will be carried on forever. I bid you my Brod, my friend a tearful goodbye. May your good soul rest peacefully in heaven.

A happy sad day for all UPD and UPLB Betans today. Happy as we are celebrating our 69th Anniversary, sad as our Creator claimed another Beta Sigman from our midst. The world just became a lesser place in Brod Orly’s passing. I will never forget Brod Orly as he was one of the brods I spent most of my resident days from 1970 - 1976. He was already an elder then, but he was always present in all our activities. We were “classmates” at the Women’s Dorm. Brod Orly rest in peace and to Sis Andie and family may you all find consolation from the outpouring of love from your Betan family from all corners of the world.

Back in the early 80s, brod Orly would always introduce me as his younger brother when he together w Efren"Klinks"Alvarez, Ric Bartolome would "kidnap" us residents from the uplb COOP tambayan & take us to gimiks from LB to Makati. Even when Dutch, the late Theodore, Ambo & I were young alumni in the 90s, we were treated by Orly to PBA games & high end restobars. This was during the time he worked with Ric Bartolome in USAID. Orly continued to tambay with the brods of the new millenium when the GP was Philip Balagot'00 until he migrated to the US.

Iba ang may pinagsamahan & Orly has given that experience with every brod he got to be close with.

Our condolences to Sis Andie& family especially to his son, brod Joam'02.

For us brods, the goodbyes are too soon.

The tremendous outpouring of grief and loss over the passing of brod Orly was to be expected. Our collective sorrow and grief over the loss of another beloved fraternity brother was authentic and heartfelt. Proof of this was the numerous, continuous posting of brod Dutch expressing his personal agony over the loss of brod Orly . Indeed fraternal love shines through.

As sad as this maybe , my heart is full of pride because truly, we love each other, and treasure each others imprint upon our lives. Indeed, "Mabuhay ang UP Beta Sigma", and may our fraternity endure through eternity.

My personal prayers go to the rest and repose of brod Orly's soul, peace and harmony to all his loved ones left behind.

All the best and Viva UP Beta Sigma,
Winston '61 Diliman

We've never met Orly, but your friendship with our brothers introduced me to who you are. You lived a life that mattered, for you have touched so many hearts and minds. You epitomized the Betan ideal, who a Beta Sigman should be. To me, you are at the top of the cream of brothers who younger brothers could emulate. I thank Sis and the children for sharing you with us, however short it was, it was a premium one

I pray eternal rest your soul, together with the souls of brothers who went earlier. I pray your family have the strength and fortitude to bear the sorrow and grief from losing you. I will share with them these. I will also share their happiness,  knowing now that you start on your new life promised by our Saviour. Let the eternal light shine upon you,  my brother.

I would not say my goodbye, but I will say, til we meet sometime in our Father's kingdom.

Yours fraternally,

We will miss Brod Orly64.
We were friends at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture before we became brothers.
We were often on the same bus ( JD ), going to Quiapo from UP --but he'd get off at Instruccion St., Sampaloc.
Orly's shirts--hand-sewed by his Mom--were always faddish and stylish. They always looked good on his lean frame.
We were together working for Brod Popoy Castaneda at the Department of Science hand-drawing veggies for a diet book.
Orly, you are now in the Lord's care, but we will continue to pray for eternal peace in paradise.
Paalam Brod Orly.
Keep smiling.

my heartfelt condolence for the passing away of a very dear brod - Orly M.

brother Orly was a real 'fighter' and a great inspiration not only to us but to all the people around him. Brod Orly will surely be missed, but at least he's now in a better place - with no more sufferings and no more physical pains... but his spirit and memories will always be with us.

may the Good Lord Bless and give comfort to the immediate family left behind by our dearest beloved brod.

Rest in Peace - Brod Orly Magistrado.

We are all grieving for Orly (Jun Leyco used to call him Bangkay but I don't know the story behind that), but the image he left behind will linger on for a long, long time.... There he was in his deathbed smiling at us, an impish grin etched on his face as always, as if assuring us that he was going to be alright. I cried in admiration as I watched that photograph. I thought it was what bravery was all about, when you can smile in the face of death. It was calming and comforting, and so inspiring. I was so proud of him!
