Today I just lost a great, loyal, generous, honest and loving brother and
friend. I grieve because the fraternity lost a die-hard brother who was
always there to extend a helping hand to every brother in need, upheld the
values of human dignity and exemplified the teachings of our fraternity.
At the same time, I feel some relief, knowing that Brod Mando is now free
from the bondage of pain and suffering from this physical world.
To our dearest Rexie, Scotty and Mark, I would like to extend my profound
sympathy and prayers in this moment of grief. May you find the strength
and solace to deal with the loss of our beloved Mando.

I’m totally astounded and deeply saddened by this news. Brod Mando Enrico
is an example of a dearly loved and respected member of our brotherhood.
On the other hand, enough is enough. Can’t bear the thought of all the
sufferings he has endured all these years and the courageous Betan spirit
to fight and stay longer with us. I condole with The Great Escape Batch
’63 which is very close to my heart. I join everyone in salute to brod
Mando and his family for taking care of hiim. I am deeply honored to visit
him the last time i saw him at the hospital during my recent visit to
Southern California.
I have to admit the joy of the Holidays is somewhat dampened by his
demise.
Paalam Kapatid na Mando. We will always treasure knowing you forever.

Barely two days before Christmas yet it is a time to grieve the loss of a
beloved Brother. The friendship between Brod Mando and myself goes a long
way -- from our Finals at the Nomar Warehouse (Caloocan) on the 21st of
March 1967 where Rexie (then Mando's girlfriend) was one of the nurses
attending to our batch; then to our many happy times at the home of Brods
Edong and Rudy Soliman, where Mando used to live. During my brief stint as
a worker in Malacanang, I was a usual fixture at the Kamuning home of the
Soliman's, with Mando and I enjoying the excellent cooking of Mommy
Soliman.
Many years passed and I would learn later that Mando had immigrated to the
United States. I recall that Brod Norman Bituin had very good words about
him having been one of the original pillars of the UP Southern California
Chapter way back in the early 80s and opened his home as one of the frat's
"headquarters". He would later become the Grand Princep. I learned that
Brod Mando had a nice job at the Canon Cameras as Distribution Manager and
was among the generous brods who was always there when someone needs help
even as he was suffering from his ailment himself and had long been out of
job. All these he did even if he did not know the brods personally… as in
the case of Brod Randy Malayao who was then a political prisoner, or
donating to residents so they could attend a fraternity ball, and very
recently to Brod Aurelio La Guardia, and many others. A good and noble
Betan, indeed.
Mando would usually find time for me in my visits to Los Angeles, treating
me to sumptuous dinners while recalling the good times with Brods Asiong
Morales and Edong Soliman, and even with Ninoy Aquino. I also recall that
Brod Mando was among the UP SoCal welcomers when Brod Norman threw a
welcome party for me as a new immigrant way back in 1996. Now he's gone
and I never had the chance to thank him enough for everything. I wish I
could give my last respects when I fly to Los Angeles next week.
Brod Mando Enrico is gone. But his name will live forever.

Our thoughts and prayers to Brod Mando and his family.
I first met Mando in 1963 ( I was a freshman in high school then ) when he
would come to our house ( mga mission noong araw sa Vanguard ) to pick up
Teddy's clothes . He would show up on Friday evenings and I was always the
one to hand him Ted's stuff.
He was no longer in Diliman when I joined Beta Sigma.
We bumped into each other in LA many years later and we fondly remembered
our Friday night meetings in '63.
Rest in peace brother.

Bing and I extend our thoughts,
prayers and deepest condolences to Rexie and Brod Mando Enrico's family.
As a Betan member of Batch'63, I remember Mando as our herald and
go-to-guy when we were 'amuyongs'. Since we considered the Betan lobby,
fine arts, vet med and DMST as hot zones to stay away from at the time,
Mando willingly provided us with information on frat activities so we
could stay in the shadows. So if one has any question about campus
happenings or want reliable info the answer one gets is.. Itanong mo kay
Mando.
The safe zone then was Vinzons Hall. I remember Mando walking around with
military bearing, a bag slung on his shoulder and books and a clip board
on one hand. One would hear his high pitched voice with a distinctive
twang (Ilocano or Pangasinense) which I find odd knowing he is from Nueva
Ecija.
But what I remember most about Mando was our final rites ordeal. Batch 63
is the largest group to enter the fraternity in the history of Beta Sigma
with 60+ members. Mando and I were among the 5 'amuyongs' who went through
final rites apart from the rest. The other three were Walter Ty and,
perhaps, Sonny Quedding and Rolly Roderos. I say, perhaps, because I am
not sure and can't verify info. Although I had my share of aahs and oohs,
Mando and Walter suffered the brunt of our ordeal. Mando for being a close
aide to GP Boy Morales and Walter for being a campus maverick.
During the break after the morning session, I can still vividly recall
Mando and Walter sitting on the floor with their back against the wall
being tended by sisters and volunteer nurses. Both were in dazed state,
could hardly move their legs, yet still hanging tough. Before the final
run, Bonga (Alex) King came to me and ordered me to stay at the tail end
to ensure everyone makes it to the finish. As I got paddled, I saw Mando
hopping and falling, and further down Walter crawling. I picked up Mando
with my right and Walter with my left and we hit the finish standing up
and bawling. I believe I am now the sole survivor of the five in that
ordeal.
Over the years, Mando continued to be my herald regarding fraternity
activities. In 1993, having heard that my family and I were on a road trip
around the US, he convinced me to take a side trip and attend the UP
NorthCal frat ball held at the Sheraton(?) in So. San Francisco. Later, on
our last leg home, he hosted a mini-reunion among the '63 at his home in
LA. In 2014, after his recovery from his major medical hurdle, Eding Hizon,
Buddy Pongos, and I, with our better halves and along with Ago Romero and
Norman Bituin visited him and commended him on his toughness and
remarkable fighting spirit. That was the last time I saw Mando.
Rest in peace, Brod.

Brod Mando was a generous and
helpful person. He passionately served the fraternity.
I just want to briefly recount three
instances when I was the recipient of his kindness. First, when he was
the warehouse manager at Pioneer USA, I purchased a home stereo
receiver and component system that
we used for 20 years. Second, when
he moved to Canon USA as distribution manager, he got me a good
deal on 2 camera lenses for my A1.
The third is a longer story that happened on July 4, 1980.
Young LA brods had cleaned out his bar on a
"spirited" spree - beer, scotch, vodka - and were pretty blown
by the time it ended. I started to
drive home with my wife Cherry and, due to a broken tail light, was pulled over
by the CHP that was particularly
alert on the Fourth of July weekend for drunk drivers on the freeway.
Failing
the sobriety test, I was hauled to the Lakewood
police station. I was allowed one phone call so I called Mando.
Mando and Rexie got Cherry to sleep the night at their house while I
spent the night in the station jail. Early the
next morning, Mando picked me up at the station, had breakfast at their
house, then drove us home. Finally I
had my day in court for "Driving
under the influence", DUI for short. As my first offense, the lenient
judge asked
the fiscal to reduce the charge from
DUI to reckless driving. Needless to say, I never drank in excess again -
not
even at Mando's, or especially at Mando's
(because as we say, "dyahi naman").
We thank you, Brod Mando, for your kindness
and we pray for you.
No DUI in heaven;) Cheers pa rin!
