Brods,
Today (Oct 14) is the birthday of Brod Eli Ongtangco. Per his wife, he is
“becoming weaker and weaker everyday. He’s so much in pain na.”
Let us continue to pray for our dear brother Eli.

Good morning brod ollie eliboy just joined our creator around 12mn last
night
let us pray dear brothers,

==================================
Thank you, ex-Prez Rolly and Ollie for relaying the news that Brod Eliboy
has joined his Creator. Just a few months ago, it was his ka-batch Walter
Navarro.
My wife Tess and I extend our deepest condolence to the family of Brod
Eliboy.
Brod Eliboy was very close to the Barkadang Cubao and the Barkadang
Project 3/4. In fact, he was very much a part of the Cubao group, and had
many fun sessions with us at Brod Norman Bituin's home and our Cubao
residence. During those times, Eliboy was among the few who learned to
cook at an early age. Bilib na bilib kami sa kanya dahil siya lang ang
marunong magluto sa amin noong mga panahon. Because of him, we enjoyed
midnight meals during our drinking sessions without bothering the
household helps.
We had a pact at the Cubao group to stay bachelors for a long time, but
Eliboy fell so much in love at a young age and was the first among us to
get married. The members of the Barkadang Cubao were there at his wedding,
with me as Eliboy's candle sponsor. We gave him a common but nice wedding
gift, courtesy of the Brod Botit Reyes' younger sister. (There is a "for
Betans-only" story behind this gift, but cannot be shared over the
internet.)
Eliboy's frat sponsor was Tony "Dog" Martin of the legendary Black Saints
'65. He was the oldest and most mature neophyte at that time, and was a
working student at Padre Faura, along with Brods Tony Panajon and Bobby
Manansala (please correct me if my memory is failing me). This was in the
late 60s, before the Brods owned the UP Manila campus in the 70s. His
leadership skills were evident even during his initiation days. I could
remember how proud Tony Martin was for having recruited an asset of the
frat.
He was our "Elvis" during that time, as he loved to sing Presley songs
that included the renowned hip moves of Elvis Presley. He would sing with
much gusto and almost in a trance during every "performance".
After graduation, Eliboy worked for many years at the Oriental Battery and
worked his way up until he became the company Vice President (for
Marketing?).
Paalam, Eliboy aka Elvis aka Ugat. You will be missed.

The UP North Brods and family are
deeply saddened by the passing of another beloved UP Betan. To our Brods
and immediate family of Brod Eli "Ugat" Ontangco, please accept our
sincere condolences. May Eli rest in peace.
I will always remember Eli's smiling, friendly and humble demeanor. But
man, can he knock down Mr. Johnny Walker. Picture taken on Dec 2009 at a
Black Saints moment at the Manikan residence. Standing Left-right: RGR'66,

Seated left-right, Phine and Ricky "Anak ni Major" Tolentino '65.
We look forward to having joyful moments with family, Brods and friends.
Unfortunately, time, distance and circumstances limit those moments. As
Gamy and Eli would have done, if they were still with us, go to those
moments, cherish the camaraderie, hug your brother. You never know when
you'll have the chance to do so again.
Ding '65, Black Saints

Subject: Re: UGAT HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
Tatang, as i told you earlier when Ugat's deteriorating health was first
reported, I did not open any email coming from the brods as I wanted to be
spared from the grief that I know would come to me if Ugat would be
reported to have crossed the bar. For a while, I succeeded, skipping
emails from Rolly, Ollie, Bernie and the others who were keeping vigil on
Eliboi's condition until I opened my laptop this morning. Your mail was
first in line and your lead, 'Paalam Eliboi' "screamed" at me and made a
numbing effect. Y'see, I was watching the Mets-Cubs playoff game and was
cheering loudly for the Mets and was euphoric when the New York team won.
Just a minute later, I saw your
email and everything else became inconsequential.....It was just a month
ago when Walter passed away and now, his kabatch followed shortly. Mababaw
ang luha ko esp for the brods we grew up with at the old tambayan. Ugat,
as in "Ugat ni Dog Martin" as Walter coined it in drinking bouts, was
especially close to us in Cubao when we frequented yung bahay ng lola ni
Botit where we played basketball with the rest of the guys including,
Danny, Tony, Norman, Babes, Yongyong, Henry, and even Erwin Castillo.
Right after classes at the UP Extension, Ugat was my classmate at the old
JaiAlai in Taft Ave where we lost our money almost nightly.
We would ride a bus going home, ako sa Cubao, siya sa Project 2, just a
stone's throw away from the houses of Vic Palafox and Alex Ilusorio.... Am
so sad remembering all these.... Tang, I am enclosing this iconic photo of
Eliboi, taken during the parade at UPLB for the Diliman-Los Banos sports
dual meet in 1969. You and Norm might have some use for it. This is how I
would always remember Eliboi, rowdy, down-to-earth and full of
life.....Elvis has left the building, again!"
Yes, Tang, dapat itong image na ito ang maalala natin lahat when we think
of Eliboi. Napakagandang litrato from the past, si Eliboi na si Eliboi!
Buhay na buhay at Elvis na Elvis! Behind him are Banz Banez and Ces
Aparato while at left are Gabby and Caloy Manalang......sana naman matagal
na panahon bago tayo umiyak uli.
I am not a religious person pero
kanina, sabi ko "Lord, please, we have been grieving for our dearly
departed brothers since last year. Please Lord, marami ring matanda na sa
Upsilon at Rhosig. Sila naman....." I know mali yon but I just can't help
it, baka sakali makatulong, di ba? Luv you. Tang, take care always...

ELIBOY AT THE FOREFRONT, in 1969, parade on the occasion of the Diliman-Los
Banos dual meet. The Diliman GP then was Jopet Laraya. Was it Tony
Altamarino who was GP in UPLB? This photo is being shared by one of
Eliboy's Barkadang Cubao, who has not yet gotten over his grief over
Walter Navarro's passing. And now Eliboy, yet another one of his beloved.
This was taken during a great occasion full of happy memories. The brods
on both campuses competed in many events: Marathon, Basketball, Swimming,
Tug-of War, Volleyball, Chess. Diliman would have probably lost the
basketball game were it not for UPLB-initiated Ray Matulac, who was then
enrolled at the School of Economics and played for UPD. There was a point
system for each event and by sunset, the points were tied, with one
adjourned chess game as the tie-breaker.
But then it was decided that we just leave it at that - a win/win
situation. A TIE BETWEEN THE TWO CAMPUSES!
Booze flowed in the dorms and cottages right after. At the College of
Forestry where I slept, a Forestry Brod who was from Zamboanga made
bowling pins out of the empty bottles of beer. Walang maka-angal, hehehe.
The next morning, a middle-aged, dressed-to-kill, and rather tall man
arrived from Manila and saw me and Bobby Manansala lying on a lawn the
next morning. We were still groggy and barely had some sleep. The man
asked, "Mga Beta Sigma ba kayo?" And then he introduced himself as the dad
of the Dimayuga Brothers. "Kasama ba ninyo dito mga anak ko na sina
Rawlingson at si Cesar? Di nga sila nagpaalam, e dadalawa lang naman 'yan!"
Well, I'm quite certain that many of us posed the same problems with our
loving parents.

Good morning Sis Elisa,
I just got back from a trip last night. As I wrote 2 weeks ago I would
send my remittance
via Xoom.com as soon as I got back.
This is the first order of the day. The money is ready
for pickup. You will need an ID and
the Xoom tran#.
Also I had mentioned that I have a picture of Brod Eli at the UP Beta
Sigma Frat Ball
in 69-70 with Brod Bogs & Agnes Cabanatan and Brod Jimmy & Lorna Santos
when
we were all seated at the same table. Brod Eli came as "stag", no
worries:).
I hope Bogs and Jimmy won't mind me sharing this priceless picture of our
young days.
Brod Eli was very close and special to us. We will continue to keep him in
our thoughts
and prayers. Our best regards to your children and grandkids, too.
Sincerely,
Norman Bituin
