I grieve the passing of Brod Cedric Gloria, who spent much of the best
years of his life in the service of our beloved fraternity.
Brod Cedric joined us in 1969 together with some of his co-graduates of
the Philippines Science High School, the very first graduating batch of
this most prestigious high school. Upon entry, he and his batch mates
immediately made an impact in the fraternity as marquis chess players.
Before their entry, Brods Vic Ulanday and Bobby Manansala were the best
players in the frat, but none of us made it to the UP Chess Team. With
Brod Cedric and his batch mates Perry Callanta and Gary Flores, the UP
Chess Team was dominated by UP Betans for a number of years. In a few
years, the UP Beta Sigma chess players would be beefed up with the
addition of Brods Gil Marzo, Ben Medina, and Jun Reyes. (At that time, we
didn't know that FIDE President Florencio "Campo" Campomanes '46 was a
brod!)
With Philippines Black Belt Champ Brod Noli Nolasco as his master, Cedric
also excelled in karate and became a black-belter himself. For many years,
he followed the footsteps of his master and likewise taught the art to
many brods from the 70s and up.
Like so many die-hards who came before and after him, Cedric's life was
intertwined with the fraternity. As a student, the AS Tambayan was his
home. As an alumnus, he served at the UP Beta Sigma Secretariat for many
years, and spent a lot of efforts doing frat projects, the directory
included. On many occasions, the frat reciprocated his love and service
and helped him and his family in times of need.
We have lost another die-hard brother. Even from 7,000 miles away and was
rarely in his company since the 70s, I feel much pain in the thought that
Brod Cedric has passed. The good and happy days with him will always
linger in our minds. We rest in the consolation that he has now joined his
Creator, and his other grandmasters Johnny Chiuten (martial arts) and
Campo (chess).

Brod Cedric Gloria was a devoted martial arts student and was an elite
member of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity School of Martial Arts (UPBSSOMA)
in the 70's. He was a certified 2nd Dan Black Belt (KaFePHJIL).
Devoted as he was in his quest for perfection, he wasted no time by
analytically studying self defense forms and styles taught to us by late
Master Johnny F. Chiuten. He accompanied me on several occasions when I
had meetings with Master Johnny F. Chiuten in his regular trips to Manila.
With the company of late Brod Bernardo "Banz" Banez and myself, Cedric was
not hesitant to point out some "critique" on some of the master's moves
which usually ends in a semi-challenge. He cherished the pains and
embarrassments and the feeling of nursing some "educational pains" from
the master he idolized so much. He was not afraid either to pose some
challenges on some of my "teachings on techniques" which resulted in the
same "traditional pains" I imposed on most of my advanced students. He
just loved to learn and be perfect.
He was a member of the UPBSSOMA famous "exhibition team" composed of UP
BSSOMA advance players of late Brod Melchor "Mel" De Santos, Bing Garcia.
Walter Navarro, Ike Araneta, Dan Lachica, late Sammy Lazo, Oyette de
Guzman and Israel Rada. The performances of this group in the campuses UP
Science High School, UP Prep, at the ladies dorms, during the Betan Week
Celebration, etc., had created an interesting following among the ladies
and students in the respective campuses. This group was also fearless in
all confrontations as well as in the tournaments in the Karate Federation
of the Philippines (KaFePhil) founded by late Master Johnny F. Chiuten Jr.
Brod Cedric, working closely with late Brod Joe Agulto and myself,
conceptualized the now traditional Martial Arts Tournament between UP Beta
Sigma -Diliman vs. UP Beta Sigma Los Banos. Brod Freddie Fajardo and late
Nelson Genito of UP Beta Sigma Los Banos (Black Shizuko Karate Klan)
coordinated this project that became an annual reality. In 1971, the UP
Beta Sigma Fraternity awarded the UP Beta Sigma School of Martial Arts the
Plaque of Recognition as a result of such endeavors.
Brod Cedric was equally proud of the award and he persevered and continued
his assistance in all my classes at the Vet Med venues, at Tambuntings'
BetaPhil combined classes and at the UP Gym. He was an adviser of the
Black Secrets School of Martial Arts (Sorsogon) on planning and was and
member of the Executive Board. He helped draft the BSSOMA Constitution and
By-laws by adapting mostly on the UP Beta Sigma Principles and Guidelines.
This was submitted and approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) in 1976.
He assisted me in my quest for
reaching out among the BetaPhil members to preserve the tradition of
martial arts in the fraternity. He shared his ideas with the elders of the
BSSOMA-Sorsogon on the successful Beta Sigma Karate Summer Training (Sorsogon)
in the 70's. The objective was to create advance students and would be
instructors of martial arts in UP Beta Sigma Fraternity in Diliman and Los
Banos as well as in the BetaPhil chapter members. His loyalty, devotion
and commitment to the fraternity is indescribable. His quest in martial
arts was a blessing. His analytical mind and ideas incomprehensible.
He was among my best students, a true Betan and a family friend. In behalf
of the students and members of the UP Beta Sigma SOMA and the Black
Secrets SOMA we share the grief in the loss of a beloved Brother.
May you have a restful peace my Brother Cedric!

On the eve of my departure from the
Philippines last Jan.10, Cedz kept me company in the hotel until it was
time to leave for the airport the next morning. He looked obviously sick
and haggard as he had just completed his dialysis treatment prior to
meeting with the brods. He had lost much weight and but his wit and sharp
comebacks have not diminished one bit. Although I had to abstain from
having alcohol, we both still had a great time reminiscing the good old
days when we were young and invincible until the conversation switched
over to the present. I expressed my sadness and concern regarding his
health and finances and I promised him that I would raise the brods'
awareness to his cause. During the whole evening he efused to even take a
nap. At around 7:00 AM, we split our ways as I headed for the airport and
he took a cab and headed home.
I spoke to Cedz just last Monday to exchange pleasantries but he did not
sound good. He was still his old witty self but I could hear coughing
noise in the background and he would pause for a few seconds. He mentioned
that he was having some kind of flu symptoms. I curiously asked him about
his scheduled appointment that day he did mention that he missed his
scheduled dialysis treatment because he was sick and he would do it the
following day. I reminded him that he should not miss any of those
sessions, which he knows very well anyway. Sadly it would have a deadly
consequence. Fortunately I was able to inform Cedz that I emailed Prez
Rolly about my promise to him to raise the issue of securing dialysis
machine(s) to be used by Betans in need. We had to cut our conversation
short because I could sense that he badly needed some rest without
realizing that it would be our last.
Brod Cedz, you are dearly loved, sadly missed and fondly remembered. May
your death and Rico Sanchez's raise our awareness to the fight against
diabetes.

Learning Brod Cedric's demise was shocking the first time I read the text
of Brod Ruben. What kabayan Vale said is true. We were all concerned with
his health as we saw him at Celebrity Sports Plaza. Brod Dan Wowie
Bautista and I had initial talks re the dialysis machine to help brods and
families to be donated to the UP Infirmary by our brotherhood. We again
discussed fast tracking the project when kabatch Gene and Norman were
here. Kabatch Gene responded swiftly by committing a certain amount. then,
sadly, the news came. Kabayan Vale was deeply worried in his email and
advised him that we will definitely pursue the project asap. Brod Cedric
has been through a lot of challenges but these hardships did not hamper
his enthusiasm doing service to our brotherhood - the only family he knew.
Brod Cedric: you definitely gave your best and it is written in our
hearts. Rest ka na brod and thanks for the cheers you gave the fraternity
all your life.

Kay Cedric,
Ikaw utol Cedric ay tunay na maaasahan,
Mahabang panahon itinaya sa kapatiran,
Halimbawa ka ng magaling na Beta Sigman,
Upang makatulong hahanap ka ng paraan,
Maraming hirap na ang iyong dinaanan,

Cedric was a quiet but deep person. He was one of the brods I looked up
too. At first I found him intimidating; perhaps because of his karate
abililities. But then, he turned out to be a pleasant surprise; soft
spoken and friendly and is never without a smile for every brod.
He will be missed.

Brod Rolly,
I will visit Brod Cedric tonite. Will try my best to attend last rites. I
will contribute directly to Cedric's daughter.
If there is a fund raise to acquire a dialysis machine you can count me
in.

Dear Brod Cedric,
Now is the time ro recall our dream
some ten or more years ago when I was an active member of the BS Alumni
Association Board, starting with the administration of Brod Romy Lumaiug
and continuing until the term of Brod Ruben Pascual.
We said we will create a development fund so that we will have a
sustainable source of funding for all the needs of our brothers, i.e, for
helping deserving brods to school, for mutual assistance such as this, for
our rental and omaintenance of the Betan Office including our website ,
for helping the young brods start their business or professional career
and to support our retired brods with their needs.... including the
building of our own headquarters on a lot donated to us at the UP, etc.
The idea was to utilize the Beta Sigma network to promote the businesses
and professional expertise of the brods and for services rendered for
which we would collect a fee for our efforts to be placed in a development
fund managed by the Board or whatever body it chooses. This was the dream
we shared with other brods, foremost of whom was Brod Ato Labadan. Ben
Pascual and others. Brod Ato spearhead the Beta Banana Project where we
will assist Brods with big plantations to plant the Saba which is in
demand and the Fraternity would share from the earnings of the project.
Brod Ato would give his services free. I was ready to support the training
and management needs from my consulting company We said the appropriate
time to create the development fund would be when we have our own website
to better communicate with each other. Ten years ago we did not even have
a complete and accurate listing of the Brods and the Secretariat was
suppose to compile the list of the alumni.
I suppose the dream is now doable as we have all the connections and the
leadership to let the Betan dream come true. The dream was to never pass
the hat again or beg for our needs. But to earn enough from the support we
can give to our Brods by way of promoting, selling or patronizing their
products or services. In order words, with our fraternal reach , our
connections, our ingenuity, and avowed promise to help one another, I am
sure we can still create the means by which we can sustain our financial
requirements through the development fund.
Brod Cedric just as you were ready to start it, you are gone, Brod Atong
is gone, and I am too old to carry it out. Maybe some of our Brods who
will read this might want to initiate the Development Fund as a source of
sustainable income for the Fraternity forever. Time for you to rest Brod
Cedric, we will continue for you. God will provide for your family.I will
send my share . Sorry I won't be at the necro, but let this be my piece.
Salamat .

This overwhelming response won't be possible without the leadership of
Rolly, Ollie , Jaime, VicR , Tatang and all band of brothers that fully
gave openly not only for Cedric but especially to his kids and apo that he
left behind . Bravo Zulu....Sabi nga pag kumilos ang Betans solid gold....
Let us extend our help and hopefully for a longer haul.

Hindi man magandang sabihin, Cedric
was among those who became too involved with the frat, and being without
family (so I heard), his home was the Tambayan. And yet his love for the
frat went far beyond the expectations of a good Betan that his academics
suffered. Maybe we could also institutionalize a good mentoring system so
that our resident brods are likewise able to meet their academic
requirements, and that the entrance scholars like Cedric will graduate
with honors.
Tunay na masarap ang maging Betan habang estudyante. Pero lalong masarap
kung nakakatulong afterwards.
Tatang
============================
I agree with this, Brod Tatang. I've
seen this happen many times: brods who have given all their time for the
Fraternity's causes and whose academics and career has suffered in the
process. In the end, after devoting their life to the Fraternity, they
have a difficulty making ends meet.
I can't see why we can't get the best of both worlds: having a brod who is
not "palso" but is able to cope with the academic requirements of the
University.
We should institute actions to help those brods who have dedicated their
lives to the Fraternity but are now in difficult situations for one reason
or another. And we should prevent this from happening in the present crop
of brods.
Count me in for this endeavor.
Cheers,
Prince Elmer A. Reyes '05A

It seems that Cedz died in
some kind of desolation but it's not true. Real men never die in desolation.Whether it was Cedz in that hospital bed, Poga checking out
quietly somewhere, Butch shot to pieces in Pilar, Bataan, Mon shipped home
after a ship brawl, Ponglinks stabbed to death, Mel who just copped out or
even Boy who never knew it was coming; and all the others that lay on the
road or earth or hospital sheets pleading to their maker to quietly take
them -- I would like to extol these bullheaded, inexorable and stubborn
characters of our fraternity who died in the line of sheer bravado,
invincible pride or cutting facelessness -- because these were some
of the best I ever walked the streets with. There are 3 things in the
world that are fatal to Betans -- pride, women and cirrhosis. The skill in
breaking hearts and others' heads is given, so is the trait of unexplained
weeping as well as the inborn capacity to transform alcohol into
testosterone. I remember Cedz not for what he said but for what he never
said. His was the unblinking, faraway gaze that he seemed to have held to
the end, as if waiting for the next move on the chess board. That's how I
knew him. He was not like Pogs who was the more cry-for-joy,
cry-for-sadness type who loudly proclaimed himself and kicked ass with his
big feet. Once Pogs was dead drunk in Botit's garden and we had to pull
him by his flowing long hair (because we were too inebriated ourselves to
carry the hulk of him) across the lawn, up the short steps into the house
and Botit's room, where he slept on the floor until the next morning. This
is what he said when he awoke: "Brod, ang sakit ng ulo ko, parang
nanggagaling sa ugat ng buhok ko." These are some of my memories of these
brods and others that make me sad this morning, memories that will always
loom and lurk somewhere in the consciousness of us all, bringing momentary
grief as we face the day ahead, but filling us with cheer in the thought
that those amongst us who have passed are waiting at the edge of the
firmament with that blessed bottle, the dare and tagay, and the fight
ahead. I love these guys, God, take me to them when I die.
