Here’s a rare photo with my batchmate Rudy Niones. In the photo are batchmate Cedric Gloria and Brod Alex Ramirez. I have not seen Brod Rudy since our heyday in UP Diliman, perhaps about 40 years ago, yet “parang kahapon lamang” when we saw each other again last May 7, 2011 during the Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight event hosted by the Diliman resident brods. There were hundreds of brods at the UP Theater hanging out after the fight, so my batchmates Rudy and Cedric decided to have our own “private” batch conversation to catch up with each other. Brod Alex tagged along. While we were enjoying the snacks at Chocolate Kiss restaurant inside UP campus and reminiscing the “good old days,”
I also took this rare opportunity to pick their brains for the leadership training that I was invited to present for the Diliman and Los Banos young brothers. As expected we had a lot of fun. After enjoying the “war stories”, the brods gave me all kinds of great ideas. Cedric and Alex were loud as they excitedly shared their ideas while Rudy was reserved but very thoughtful in his suggestions. He looked very well-trimmed to me and young-looking when he smiled and shared his relatively quiet laughs.
Last October 2011, I threw in a one-liner message to him via Facebook and he responded. Last December 21, 2011, I sent another message to him because I noticed a big change in his photo and I got really worried. He said “kalalabas ko lang ng hospital nagpa-chemo.” I knew then that his situation was very serious. I told him “Sige brod magpalakas ka. Kita uli tayo…Mag-reunion tayo ng batch natin! Take care. Bye-bye. Palakas ka utol! Looking forward to seeing you again with Gary, Cedric, Perry, and others.” Brod Rudy responded “ok brod, cheers.”
Two days before Christmas, December
23, we greeted each other a “Merry Christmas.” That was the last greeting
I will be hearing from him. Brod Rudy will be missed at the batch reunion
of Jericho 69C when it happens. Good bye ka-Batch!
