Lets pray for the soul of another great Betan Florencio Campomanes UP Diliman, batch '46, former president of International Chess Federation (FIDE), who passed away, 1:30 am, May 3, 2010 after he succumbed to cardiac arrest. According to Philippine chess officials, he is scheduled for cremation today, May 4 in Baguio City. Attached is a picture taken 3 yrs ago at Antipolo Valley Golf Clubhouse.

TRIVIA: Campo's tambayan way back in the late 60s to early 70s was at the Philippine National Chess Club located at the mezzanine floor of the covered Fiesta Carnival beside Araneta Coliseum. He was most visible during the Fischer-Spassky World Chess Championship Match in 1972, and was a highly respected individual especially among the country's top chess players.

I recall that everytime Campo would arrive at the PNCC, everybody including Grandmaster Eugene Torre, International Master Glen Bordonada (whom Vic Ulanday and I didn't even bother to recruit because he looked so nerdy and "totoy na totoy") and the other National Masters would make way for him, like that of a royalty arriving at his castle.

From a mere club level chess player who couldn't even make it to the UP Chess Team, unlike Brods Ruben Medina, Cedric Gloria, Perry Callanta, Gary Flores, Jun Reyes, Gil Marzo, etc.
