Recollections:

** Pogs Gaspay'68

There were others not in that list of honored alumni. One brod who should also have been on that list was Dodong Castillo (73d Haribon).  I am sad remembering them, but greatly honored to have known them.

** Norman Bituin'65

One of the 71 U.P. martyrs listed here to be honored is Brod Vergel "Butch" Landrito, UPD'68a.  He joined the NPA and was killed in an encounter with the govt. troops in Botolan, Zambales in 1972.

I remember this episode well because I was the Diliman GP at the time; saw his bullet-riddled body along with his other slain comrades at the morgue, a scene I will never forget; and led the funeral procession with the residents at the cemetery and during the wake presented a Betan scroll signed by the brods and the fraternity pin to his parents.  He was buried in a shallow grave in Botolan and only after some time was he identified and brought back to Manila by his older brother and father.  His father, who was a dentist, recognized him from his dental records and also through his Betan "tatak" (cigarette mark on the hand), which had not decomposed and was still visible.

From the playbill of "Welga! Welga!!, allow me to quote the following which appeared in the one page ad of the souvenir program:

The production of Welga! Welga!! was never staged as martial law was already declared on September 21, 1972. This was also the scheduled date of the technical dress rehearsal of the play which was also aborted. The playbill, however, was already printed only to be destroyed as it contained so much information about the production. I managed, however, to keep 2 copies for my souvenir!!

SIGWA
