by Raffy Hidalgo
Alexis ‘Dogs’ Dogwe ’06 was recently
appointed as Officer-in-Charge of SteelAsia’s Bulacan Works, the
Philippines’ largest steel manufacturing plant. As OIC Brod Dogs is
responsible for a gargantuan task of managing an 11-hectare facility that
operates 24 hours a day and seven days a week, and generates PhP 15
billion in revenues for SteelAsia annually.

Brod Dogs joined SteelAsia in January 2012 fresh out of college,
graduating last October from the U.P. College of Engineering with a
Bachelors Degree in Materials Engineering. Initially, Brod Dogs was doing
Corporate Planning work, including business modeling, research, and
project feasibility when he caught the eye of the company’s top executives
as an up and coming manager. Fortuitously, the top position of one of
SteelAsia’s four facilities opened up, and the SteelAsia management saw a
win-win situation where the company could benefit from youthful enthusiasm
and sharp problem-solving skills that Dogs would bring, while Dogs would
gain invaluable experience that would place him on the road to be a future
senior executive of the company.
SteelAsia is the Philippines’ leading steel company. It has a 47 year
history and is part-owned by Tata Steel of India. The company has
facilities in Meycauayan Bulacan, Calaca Batangas, Carcar Cebu and in
Bunawan, Davao City. Already South East Asia’s largest manufacturer of
rebar, it is one of the fastest growing steel companies in the world, with
plans underway to increase its 1.6 million ton per year capacity to 2.8
million tons per year by 2016. With revenues this year expected to exceed
PhP 40 billion, the company is among the top 30 in the Philippines.
Brod Dogs has been a key figure among the residents in the past five
years, holding several positions over this period in the Fraternity’s
roster of officers. He has also been an active participant in the U.P.
Beta Sigma SOMA and was among those who learned under the late great
martial arts Grandmaster Brod Johnny Chiuten ’60. He recently also became
the youngest volunteer of the Operation Big Brother Foundation (OBBF).
