Brod Dolf de la Rosa, UPD'63 - Goodbye and Cheers...

Dear Brods,

It is with deepest sorrow that I inform you that Brod Rudolf de la Rosa, UPD'63, passed away peacefully at his home in Salisbury, Maryland yesterday Aug. 31.  Last night, I talked to Kay, whose email below I am forwarding to you.  She said that Dolf will be cremated.

Kay has been a constant support and the closest friend of Dolf and the UP Betans for as long as I can remember, even back to our college days in Diliman in the 60's.  I had the sad news flashed at our International website last night.  I waited for Kay's letter so she could tell us about Dolf's fighting spirit and determination, as well as convey to the brods her personal feelings and thoughts.  To you, Kay, we are all forever grateful.

Let us pray for Brod Dolf and his family, and send him off with loud "Cheers!!" for a life well lived.

Fraternally,

Norman UPD'65, for the UPBSFI

Dearest Friends -

A month ago, when Dolf realized there was no further chance of remission, he asked a favor of me.  Dolf asked that I express to all his dear friends how overwhelmingly grateful he was for your friendship and loyalty through the years and, particularly, your love, support and prayers in this past year.  Sadly, the time for that message has come... Dolf died at 5:15 this evening.  He was at home and his brothers and sister-in-law and nephew and I were at his bedside.   The last two days he had been struggling but at the end, not long after a blessing by a minister who is a family friend, he relaxed and peacefully let go. It is heart wrenching for those of us he left but a blessed release from pain and illness for Dolf.

When Dolf was diagnosed 15 months ago, the doctors told him he had only a few months to live.  With typical Dolf determination (some might even say hard headedness), he set out to prove them wrong and thanks to all of you, he did, living this last 15 months with joy and love and gratitude.  He feared at times that he had not adequately expressed that gratitude to all of you... for the pictures, the stories, the emails, the cards, the food, the phone calls, the gifts, the visits and, most importantly, your loving friendship and your prayers.   He knew how blessed he was that each of you has been a part of his life.

He also hoped we wouldn't greet his death with sorrow but rather with celebration.  Sorrow is inevitable but so too should be a celebration remembering all the precious times (the serious and the frivolous; the quiet and the boisterous) and the deep friendship we shared with our beloved Dolf.  The family will have a private gathering to remember Dolf.  Since we all can't be together,  maybe we can have our celebration by sharing our wonderful memories online.  Dolf loved the computer and would think it a most appropriate way for us all to celebrate his life and share our grief over it's brevity.

On a personal note, thank you all for the kindness and support you've shown me over the last year as well.  You are very precious to me and most of you are in my life because of Dolf.  For that, and so many other things, I will be eternally grateful to him and miss him terribly.

I don't have Dolf's email address book so, please, forward this message to those I have missed.  I'll fly home tomorrow but you can always reach me on my cell phone (612-360-3142) or by email.

Love to you all, K.

p.s. I have written some emails from Dolf's computer over the last few days but that address is now shutdown so please contact me at this address: karlin@karlinsymons.com .  Thanks.
