JULY 2005 UDATE

Medical Mission:  We are sending 2 Physician Travel Pack (PTP) to " Barrio Krus na Ligas".  The barrio is located behind Loyola Heights and UP.  The PTP is a program supported by the Canadian government to provide medicines to developing countries for most common ailments at a discounted price.  A pack can serve as many as 1,000 patients.  The medicines will be turned over to the UPBSFAA.  Point brods there are:  Dr. Brod Noneng Monroy, professor, UP College of Medicine (who will dispense the medicines together with our doctor brods from UP, UERM, and of course, supported by the residents, ladies' corps, etc.), and Dr. Brod Joe Diaz, DVM (City Vet for the City of Manila).  Medicines were hand-carried by Brod Art De Vera from Toronto to the Philippines last June 16.  Planned launching date is July 14, 2005.

Computers & Books:  We have some 40 computers on hand for shipment.  Target beneficiary is the UP Integrated School.  We hope to awaken the students' awareness of the Beta Sigma Frat while still in High School.  Computers were donated by Brod Ago and Eva Romero.  Some monitors were donated by Brod Manny Gatmaitan.  Freight cost to RP is being shouldered by Brod Judge Rey.  The books are a wealth of info for teachers.  Some titles are:  Teaching Science for all Children, Teaching Children to Read, Effective Strategies for Teaching Reading- all of which are good resource books for educators.  These were donated by Brod Joe Lalas, Ph.D., current Associate Dean, College of Education, Univ of Redlands.

Sports Equipment:  We have sent sports equipment and uniforms to Payatas Elementary School, QC.  This is a continuing project headed by Brod Boi Wico.  Students there are so poor that during track practice, one waits for another to finish so he can use the same running shoes.

Recycling Project:  We collect and sell recyclables and add the revenue to the coffers.  This is an on-going project chaired by Brod Elmor Villanueva.

Commemorative Betan Pin:  Working with Brod Wally Rodriguez out of New York, we have come up with the design for the UP Beta Sigma Alumni pin.  Design was presented to UPBSFAAI Pres. Vic Ramos.  The pins will be ready for distribution by the NorCal fratball weekend.

Continuing UP Scholarship Program:  The SoCal Chapter continues to sponsor its scholarship program for deserving UP students.  This has become a tradition since the founding of the Chapter in the early 80s.  This program not only provides tuition fees for the scholar, but also stipend and books.
