We have both good news and sad news in a tragedy-laden "Escape From Alcatraz" triathlon held last Sunday, August 25, 2008.

Our very own Ross Panggat UPLB 94a finished the gruelling triathlon race not as a top finisher but may have won the hearts and admiration of the athletic community, a grieving family and most of all our commendation for a human act of courage and true dedication to saving lives. Brod Ross was swimming the treacherous waters between Alcatraz Island and San Francisco when a 63-year old tri-athlete named Phillip Coulston suffered a heart attack, about 100 meters to shore. Brod Ross, true to his MD profession, gave up his race to rescue and help revive the victim who later died. (See news item on SF Chronicle)

Brod Ross was mentioned as an unidentified swimmer who aided the victim to help a fellow athlete. For this, let us give our highest commendation, most sincere admiration and deep appreciation for his courageous act. Long Live Beta Sigma !!!
