A.  Sports (as narrated by Pogs Gaspay and Vic Gacusan)

The morning of the second day was devoted to several sporting competitions – Golf, Bowling and Billiards. The Golf Tournament was held at the Skywest Golf Course in Hayward at 8 am. The best gross score was won by Bhot Salas while closest to the pin was Rolly Balingit. Ed Cornelia was given a special award.

The Billiards Tournament started at 10 am, Sunday, May 24 at the Serra Bowling Center in Daly City where the Bowling Tournament was also going on. Only 4 players showed up to play in a round robin competition where each had to play the other players. Players  were Ago Romero for UP South Cal, Butch Fernando for San Francisco, Tony Pongol for San Francisco and Pogs Gaspay for UP North Cal. Each match was a nine-ball game format where the first player to win 3 games was declared winner of the match. The player with the most match wins after the round robin was to be declared the tournament champion.  If there was a tie then another match was to be played between the top tied competitors. The results of the round-robin matches were 3 wins-0 loss for Pogs (Champion), 2 wins-1 loss for Butch Fernando, 1 win-2 losses for Tony Pongol and 0 wins-3 losses for Ago Romero.

In Bowling, the winners were Sam Moraleda for High Series, David Gatmaitan for High Game, and UP Beta Sigma Northern CA as team champion.

B.  Catamaran SF Bay Cruise (as narrated by Ike Araneta)

After some frantic last minute changes in the participants, we were able to complete all of the 48 seats for the charter. The cruisers woke up early to be transported from the hotel to Fisherman’s Wharf.

All 48 boarded at Gate J of Pier 39 adjacent to where the sea lions would sun bathe.  Undaunted by the light fog and the cold wind, all boarded with much anticipation and excitement.  As the sails picked up wind the catamaraners saw the San Francisco sky line recede behind them, savoring the beauty as the city glistened under the sun rays that penetrated the fog cover.

There we were gliding through the water as the wind carried us toward the Golden Gate.  As we approached the bridge, almost everybody scrambled out for a pose and a camera shot.  Ed Abon even laid down on his back with only the floor netting between him and the water just to take a shot of the bridges belly.

The 48-strong included Ivy Cosio-Bautista, Lem Michelena and Laureen, Togi and Eva Igot, Jim Gonzalvo and Teresa, Ed, Rosie, Carlo, Nina Abon, JayJay Jayme leading 9 of the Jayme clan, Greg Palis, his wife and sister-in-law, Cherry Bituin, Tessie Nolasco, Yay Topacio and family, Peter Guzman and his son, Tony Martinez and his son, Vee and Ruby, Josue and Lita Castillo, Mayette Arceo and daughter Elanna.

A little chilly but fun.  Thanks to the transportation committee for their support.

Kudos to Ike & Tanya Araneta for organizing a memorable travel experience

C.  International Conference and Los Banos "101010" Launching

In the afternoon, the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity International (UPBSFI) Conference presided by Willie "Tatang" Vergara tackled the two-fold vision of our international movement that began in 2001. He began by citing the a brief history of why and how this movement was born in 2001 with no other than Founder Father Jesus R. Jayme attending. He later presented the major accomplishments of UPBSFI during the past two years which, he emphasized, could not have been made possible were it not for the Board of Directors, the UPBSFI Champions, the partners in vision and mission, and the whole membership.

A succinct financial summary by Treasurer Edsel Arceo followed, showing highlights from a 14-page handout detailing the receipts and disbursements in the USA and in the Philippines. Edsel emphasized on the need for sending over members' 2009 payments given the ruling that only those in the list of paid members shall be entitled to vote during the coming elections.

Among the speakers of the event was Founder Rico Arranz, who dealt on Mutual Assistance Program and focused on the possibility of setting up a fund that will be in tandem with the program being set up in Manila by Orly Pena who is on top of the Beta Sigma Business Development Center. Undersecretary Rolly Reyes gave a revealing, excellent presentation on the changing landscape in the University of the Philippines campuses. The emphasis of his presentation is that for UP Beta Sigma to survive during the next century, we must be able to first understand the current and emerging developments of this cyber world as a starting point in developing a ‘new soul’.

This was followed by the 101010 Launching with speakers Rotsen Lawas (who read the message of UPLB Beta Sigma President Leo Balagot regarding the planned activities during the UP LB Beta Sigma Diamond Anniversary, Dutch Aragones (Big Brothers Bounty), and Johnny Regadio (The Betan Heritage Park prepared by Rene de Rueda).

Fred Aquino, COMELEC Chairman, explained the Election Rules and pointed out the main changes of this year’s election of the Board of Directors. Among the major changes of this year’s election, he said, is a more global representation as a result of increasing membership from all over the globe following the CBL-dictated 'rule of 8' meaning. He reiterated the need for members to immediately remit their 2009 dues considering that at the time of reporting, only 140 have so far paid their dues. He enjoined everybody to watch for the designated dates such as the last day of payment, nomination period, and the election day itself (July 31, 2009).
