Mindanao Alumni Chapter
HISTORY
A Brood Apart: The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity and Sigma Beta Sorority in Davao City The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity and Sigma Beta Sorority Alumni Association in Davao City is perhaps the only one of its kind in the history of the Betan brotherhood and sisterhood. It was brought to life in 2002 by a unique assembly of alumni brothers mostly based in Davao City and the younger set of alumni sisters from the newest constituent of the UP campus, the UP Mindanao. If there is one thing distinct about the UP Mindanao Betans, it would be their close bond and affection for one another. Too close, in fact, that other brods and sisters abroad often hear about it that they would visit Davao to see for themselves. The fellowship among Davao-based alumni brothers actually started in 1959 when three college batchmates composed of Brods Erning Goseco (’56), Ric Villanueva† (’56), and Anggie Angliongto (’57) joined by Brod Boy Gonzalez (’55) who found their way back to Davao would gather together in an attempt to establish their identity as UP graduates. These meetings eventually became the foundation of the solidarity among alumni brothers and sisters who settled in Davao, inspiring all others in the surrounding regions of Surigao, Bukidnon and General Santos to join the fellowship. In 1988, in an effort to keep the fire of brotherhood burning, Brod Percy Cañeda (’64) revived the organization. His efforts was then pursued by Brod Amado de Borja (’56) that ultimately transformed the loose community into a full-pledge organization of alumni brothers and sisters. On February 21, 1995 as the President of the UP Alumni Association Davao Chapter Brod Anggie Angliongto succeeded in gaining the support of Pres. Fidel V. Ramos to create the UP Mindanao. Republic Act 7889 was signed and UP Mindanao was established in the 204-hectare land sliced from the Bureau of Plant Industry at Bago Oshiro, Mintal District, Davao City. The first challenge to the alumni was heralded. The brothers yearned to put up a chapter of the Fraternity in UP Mindanao. With Brods Jojo Criador (‘81b), Julius Valdez (’69), Elcid Ablang (’89), and Ely Garcia (’57) at the helm, they scoured the small population of UP Mindanao students but found that indeed Betans are a rare breed. Instead, on October 26, 1997 the brods led the sisters Siony Garcia (’61), Jinky Morales (’61), Baby Robillo and Grace Criador (’82) to find Sis Gayedelle Florendo and Mia Depalobos who became the charter members of the UP Sigma Beta Sorority, UP Mindanao chapter. Meanwhile, the search for that elusive Betan brother took longer than expected. But the brods were steadfast on one simple rule; quality could never be sacrificed for quantity. Finally, on June 19, 1999 - at the farm of Brod Danny Abad (’74) in Los Amigos, Calinan-the seed was sown for the birth of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, UP Mindanao Chapter with only one qualified candidate, Brod Eshir Ismael (’99). A couple of productive years went by and the number of graduates from the UP Mindanao chapter grew. This inspired alumni brods and sis to revitalize the alumni association once again. By this time, a unique relationship between the alumni and the UP Mindanao brods and sis has blossomed into a kind of camaraderie that became the trademark of the Fraternity and Sorority in the UP Mindanao campus. The residents commanded a strong presence in the campus largely due to the strong support it gathered from the alumni brods and sis and the wisdom of Brod Dong Rasco (’67) who served as their adviser and Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics in UP Mindanao. In 2002, when the first two batches of brods and sis from UP Mindanao graduated, the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity and Sigma Beta Sorority Alumni Association elected its first set of officers. The association was initially composed of 38 brods and 10 sisters united by four main objectives. These were to have a collective effort in helping the resident brods and sis in the UP Mindanao campus, strengthen the camaraderie among Davao-based brods and sis, help the UP Sigma Beta in forming their own alumni association in the future and have a bigger number so as to institute bigger projects. It now has 83 members composed of 43 brods and 40 sisters mostly based in Davao City and the surrounding provinces. |
