UP Mindanao Betans Throw Freshmen Party ‘08

By Mon Echeverria, UP Beta Sigma Mindanao, Master of the Rolls

The UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, Mindanao Chapter mustered around 50 (around 1/3 of the total freshmen population) new UPMin freshmen from different courses who attended a pool party at Larous by the Sea in Talomo, Davao City last 12 September 2008.  The event was spearheaded by Brod Boji Bote, the Chapter’s incumbent Grand Princep.

The Freshmen Party was a simple get together of UPMin upperclassmen composed mostly of Betans and freshmen students aimed to welcome the latter to UPMin.  Upperclassmen-initiated activities in campus are banned by the UPMin administration due to an  event that transpired during UPMin Torch Night in June 2008.  The first part of the party were parlor games like card relay, find the hidden Malmon, blindfold race, and bet on a Betan (a beer drinking contest among Brods where the freshies placed a bid on the participating Brod), among others.  The freshies likewise enjoyed the videoke singing contest where the player who got the highest machine points won the game.  The freshmen team that got the highest points in all games was awarded a trophy, a bundle of junk foods, and a bottle of wine.

The residents likewise prepared a simple dinner for the freshies through the donations of Brods Anggie Angliongto UPLB ‘57, Mon Carpio UPD ’63, and Jojo Criador UPLB ’81.  Among the alumni Brods who were present in that activity were Dong Rasco UPLB ’67, Danny Abad UPLB ’74, Norman Dumalag UPLB ’92, Jayrome Rala UPMin ’00, and Ronald Dizon UPMin ’02.  We were also joined by Prof. Robby Alabado (non-Betan, Mason) who now serves as the chapter’s junior adviser.
