A glimpse from the past...
33 years ago - Tumbleweeds '75 (this appears in 'Memory Lane I' section)
That was Rodeo '75 pic during the oath taking of sportsmanship. L-R: Tony Pusag, George Gines, Manolo 'Peter Fonda' Banzon, Pooks Pagcaliwagan, Vee "Jimi Hendrix' de Vera, and Herbert Ticzon. The following is an excerpt from the article, 'The Tumbleweeds in the College Rodeo' by Brod Uly Lustria. This will be published in the Chronicle Project being prepared by Brod Dutch Aragones.
Beta Sigma's Tumbleweeds rodeo team skippered by Freddie Fajardo, assisted by Leo Balagot with Tony Ordoveza as coach copped the coveted championship crown in the 1974 Rodeo. Tying for second place were the IH Hi-Men Wreckers and the Wild Bunch, with the Rough Riders taking the third place. Crowned Rodeo Queen '74 was Miss Lisbeth de Padua, muse of the IH Hi-Men Wreckers. In 1974, the 'First Marlboro-Greenhills Roundup' was held at the Greenhills Shopping Center. Seven UPLB teams composed of students and alumni played. An American team, the Sacramento Cowboys, composed of Clark airbase American servicemen pitted their talents with the locals. Other local teams were the experienced BAI Selection and the cowhands of the Ortigas Ranch. Again, Beta Sigma's Tumbleweeds with Freddie Fajardo as team captain, Leo Balagot, co-captain, and Rudy Abad, playing coach clinched the championship trophy. This might as well be the first national Pinoy rodeo of sort and the Tumbleweeds was the first national rodeo champ!
Some Comments: -- Tony Frio, UPLB Batch South Pacific '60
Our sincerest congratulations to all the brods (and sis) who helped Brod
Rupert and his tv program crew broadcast the rodeo-Tumbleweeds show!
Betans are really a different breed. -- Pogs Gaspay, UPD'68 More good news from our Los Banos brods! Congratulations are indeed in order for Brod Renato Mabesa* for a much honored professional achievement from which we can bask in reflected glory. And congratulations are due also to the brods who organized the Rodeo press coverage, a very positive image for our frat. Cheers, cheers to our LB brods!

-- Popoy Castaneda, UPLB'55 Brod Freddy, I saw the Rodeo pix and it brought me back in our time in LB, it was Joseph Madamba who started the Rodeo informally with the Betans who are members of the Ranchers Club. It was done as a culminating activity for the summer classes at the then Animal Husbandry Department which was predominated by Betans (Amading Campos, Lino Nazareno, Lourdio Clamohoy, Dr. Ernie Rigor, Joseph Madamba, Vic Talaue). I was then a member of the Ranchers Club together with brods Perfing Palacios, Johnny Florin, Atong Sanchez, Joe Masibay, Bobby Belmonte, Tony Bautista, Angel Mendoza and Tony de Guzman. The Rodeo thing then was an informal affair, to show off what we learned from our large animal husbandry classes, Joe Madamba then showed off the teams who were more adept in the techniques. When I left it was Jess Pido who was starting to organize a team among the Brods. Would this be the forerunner of the now famous Tumbleweeds?
-- Freddy Fajardo, UPLB'64
We are negotiating
with Brod Rupert to provide us a copy of the tv footage so we can post it
in our website and also for viewing during the Tumbleweeds Recognition
nite on Aug. 29. Medyo mahirap lang daw kasi copyrighted na yun material.
We hope hosts Donita Rose and Kim Atienza can join us again. According to
Kim, brother in-law niya si Brod Bogan Cabanatan, so familiar siya sa Beta
Sigma when he saw me wearing the Tumbleweeds tshirt with Beta Sigma.
