UPLB Beta Sigma and Sigma Beta ramp up freshmen recruitment by Freddy Fajardo, UPLB'64 [*Note: Freddy is the Corporate Secretary of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association, Inc., Los Banos Chapter] Last June 18, the University with the help of various student organizations held a welcome breakast, dubbed "Almosalan", for the new freshmen at the SU amphitheater. While other student orgs only served coffee, hot chocolate and pandesal, the Brods and Sis offered packed Jollibee breakfast meals (pinaka sosyal!) to around 200 new freshmen. It was also an opportunity for the residents to scout for new recruits from among the incoming "iskolar ng bayan".

... and comments & stories from the Alumni Brods **Willie Vergara'67: SUPER-GALING! The other orgs will definitely try to outdo you next year, but by then you shall have new gimmicks. Like an arnis exhibition, if that would be allowed.
**Gilbert Basbas'73: That should give us new clues on how to get new Betan recruits....gather the freshmen for a new yugyugan "Concert" ala Folkways, feed them music and breakfast!
**Frank Mamaril'56: In fact I was informed (by MIS Sis Macelle) that the resident Brods and Sis are sponsoring a University Concert with two famous rock bands this coming July 10th.
**Rene de Rueda'64: Saludo ako! Ang galing ng ginawa ninyo. Hoping to see soon "the fruits of the good efforts" of the UPLB brods and sisters. Cheers! God bless!
**Popoy Castaneda'55: Freddie, The pictures you sent about the Almosalan at UPLB sent me back to 1954 when the Frat welcomed and assisted the freshmen in the enrollment. This is a capital idea.
**Freddy Fajardo'64: Brod Popoy, In the 50's to early 60's it used to be a "Bonfire" for the new freshmen as a welcome gimmick. During those times, the new freshmen wore a green "scalp cap" to identify them as greenhorns in the campus. Though, hindi ko na naabutan ito.
**Popoy Castaneda'55: Freddie, In addition to the Bonfire the Fraternity officially assisted in the registration of freshmen in the university. Wearing the Betan berets and name tags we assisted not only the enrolees but also the enrollment process. We even had brods helping freshmen find suitable dormitories and assisting individual Freshies to fill up their enrollment form specially the coeds. We even made and put up signs to guide the enrollees and this activity was officially sanctioned by the Dean of Student Affairs. This activity of the Fraternity was one of the factors that attracted me to join the Beta Sigma. Cheers. **Manolo Banzon'68: In the late 60's and 70's, it became Torch parade - a welcome for new freshman. It started in front of the old Plant Pathology Bldg., ending at the upper parade grounds where the UPCA dean gave a speech. We provided the bamboo torches earlier gathered and prepared by the resident brods. All torches were then thrown in front of the gazebo, thus a huge bonfire. It was initiated by our UPLB Chapter. Nostalgic!
**Anggie
Angliongto'57: What Brod Popoy said
is very true. During our time of '57 in UPLB we did the same approach of
treating the freshmen very well. That is why many of them wanted to join
our Frat. And we had a choice of accepting them based on quality. I wish
the present generation of resident brods will do the same instead of
confining too much among themselves and attracting trouble! During the
election of the Student Council officers, our Frat carried the battlecry
called "DUTY ABOVE ALL PARTIES". We assisted the administration on
enrollment where we identified the good backgrounds of the freshmen. We
were given assignment on those potential recruits based on what province
they came from.
