by the UPBSFAAI Secretariat

Brod Ruben Pascual was given a rousing welcome last Jan. 30 as 120 brods and guests attended his oath-taking as the 15th president of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association, Inc. (UPBSFAAI).

Leading the welcomers are 9 past presidents of the UPBSFAAI led by fraternity founder Rico Arranz, former cabinet secretaries Vic Ramos and Boy Morales, incumbent congressman Mat Defensor, current Senior Undersecretary Mon Paje of the Department of Environemt and Natural Resoruces, lawyer Boyet Fernandez, First Gentleman of UP Pat Roman, UPAA Director Romy Lumauig, Buddy Garbanzos and immediate past president of UPBSFAAI Dario Sabularse.

Also present among other prominent brods include former UP President Jose “Pepe” Abueva, Press Undersecretary and Chairman of National Broadcasting Network Rolly Reyes, former DA undersecretary and Waling-Waling resort owner Orly Sacay, and Union Bank President and UPBFSAAI’s Executive Vice-President Victor Valdepeñas, who delivered the inspirational message for the new Regional Directors of DENR. Brods Orly Sacay and Jelly Nacino were also in attendance.

The five Regional Executive Directors who were honored are Joe Diaz (NCR), Jun Galinato (CAR Baguio), Jun Lingan (Cagayan, Tuguegarao), Max Dichoso (Zamboanga) and Jim Sampulna (Davao). They were all present for the Testimonial and the Oath-Taking ceremonies, amidst the warm welcome of FMB Director Romy Acosta and Bureau Director brods, UPAA Directors Brods Fel Calora and Frankie Cornejo, and distinguished UPLB Brods, among others.

Brod Sonny Pagador, who just flew in from the United States, took his Oath of Office as the Vice-President for International Affairs.

Some 30 brods from UPLB graced the affairs, some coming all the way from Laguna. Brods from UP Baguio also attended the affair with no less than Board Member Atty. Ying Palafox leading the group and founder of UP Baguio Bong Penillo.

Jason Justo, who is the current President of OBBF, was with thirty OBBF brods. The ever boisterous Raffy Hidalgo was also around together with Atty. Peter Danao, Dr. Binji Pangaibat, Rupert Ambil, and current Board Members Ron Justo, Andre Umali, Atty. Ying Palafox, Lloyd Dizon to name a few.

The past Board of Directors and Officers were also present to welcome the new set of Officers for 2009-2010. These brods are Joe Cruz, Jonas Tetangco, Gene Puente, Joey Zulueta and others.

Resident brods from Diliman also came in numbers to pay their respects to the New President and the Board of Directors of UPBSFAAI.

The occasion was also graced by the presence of Sigma Betans Josie Saddul, Fe Tantiansu and Babes Soliman who incidentally were our co-organizers in the recently held UP Centennial Ball. The Sigma Beta residents were also present and were seated at the front table.

Ladies Corps Becky Malay, Bing Isunga and Eileen Rivera mingled with brods of the seventies: Brods Joel Paredes, Cris Michelena, Cedric Gloria, Rudio Oviedo, Danny Paz, Danny Mendoza, Ick Angeles, Cesar Landrito, Mike Guigio, Caloy and Dante Agulto, and Philip Marfil

The Secretariat was assisted in the preparation for this momentous event by the editorial Staff of The Betan*, who incidentally launched the first issue after five dormant years. The Brods are Wo Coronel, Raffy Tomeldan, Alvin Aguinaldo, Ron Justo, Mel Ladip, Poti Aparato, and with lone female staff Cherry Carlos as the Admin. Assistant. This is the first the new board of the alumni issued The Betan on its first day of office.

Prior to the evening ceremonies, the board held its first meeting from 4 to 6 pm at the Chuidian Room of Club Filipino to immediately map out internal policies and discuss planned programs. The board was briefed by brods involved in the UP Alumni Association such as UPAA board directors Romy Lumauig and Fel Calora and UPAA executive director Frankie Cornejo on the forthcoming UPAA elections this May.

Other key decisions include confirmation of the following executive officers: Ruben Pascual as President, Vic Valdepenas as Executive Vice President, Ick Angeles as Secretary, Ron Justo as Treasurer, and Pert Somera as Auditor. Also appointed were legal counsels Jito Arreza and Leo Pascua and geographic vice-presidents: Ben Albarece for Mindanao, Jess Latoja for Visayas, Butch Tadena for Luzon and Sonny Pagador for international.

The board also agreed to meet every last Friday of the month which should be followed with fellowships. Next meeting hence will be on February 27. They will also designate alternate board directors who will attend for them in case they cannot attend any meeting who will have full voting powers on their behalf. This assures that each board meeting will have a quorum, a perennial problem of past alumni boards.

When the program ended at least 50 brods stayed to continue the fellowships at Club Filipino then most brods proceeded to Aruba in Metrowalk and to Caloy Agulto’s Gerardo’s Bar & Restaurant along Panay Ave.

A rousing start indeed for the UPBSFAAI Board of 2009-2010. Cheers to them and to all of Beta Sigma!
