BETAN Relief '09 for Typhoon Ondoy,

aka "Oplan Sunshine":

A Potpourri of Photos & Messages

November 09, 2009

Dear Brods,

We would like to convey our most heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the support that you have rendered unto the victims of Typhoon “Ondoy” situated in the North Fairview area, Quezon City. The recipients of your kind assistance were terribly affected by the recent calamity because they were living near the creek in North Fairview when the La Mesa Dam was forced to release water during the height of the said typhoon. Ineluctably, the onrushing water washed away whatever they owned including their shelters.

These unfortunate souls of about 75 families, were able to acquire alcohol, soap, bread and other foodstuff last Sunday, November 08, 2009, through your generous assistance. All told, “OPLAN SUNSHINE” was a success. Let us continue to provide succor to the downtrodden wherever they may be in this world.

Through our efforts as Beta Sigmans we realize as we continue to provide aid to people that God’s divine work here on earth is truly our own.

Very truly yours,

Brods,

I would like to extend my gratitude to all of you for all the help and prayers for the safety of my family during the typhoon Ondoy. Your help would go a long way as we start anew after this tragedy. Aside from all the assistance, nothing beats the encouragement I got when we were trapped in a neighbor's place during those two and a half days of flooding.

My whole character was tested during that time - as a man I had to compose myself every time I swam the murky waters to and from my place hauling people in duraboxes/plastic drums and reminding myself that I should not die; as the head of the family I had to show strength as I comfort my family during that most challenging time; as a neighbor and friend I felt that it was my duty not to stop until all of us were safe most especially my neighbor's wife who was about to give birth (she eventually gave birth at the Medical City hours after we were rescued 3am Monday). I could literally smell death as I did ten round trips while the water rose and the undercurrent became stronger. During the final lap I drank kanal juice. When evening came we saw a floating hand and we heard pleas for help until the voices just slowly disappeared. Honestly, I got tired (tangina sino ba naman ang hindi e di man lang ako nakapag-stretching!) but never gave up. Tabets ako e.

To my batskas Alex Bermas and Jerome Obviar who risked their lives in an initial attempt to rescue us as early as 1030 am Saturday morning, salamat. Alex picked us up from the hospital 430am Monday morning and offered their place as a temporary shelter for my family. To the OBBF especially to the Operation Sunshine crew who visited my place and brought more than sunshine while we were salvaging what was left of the first floor: Melvir Buela, Raffy Hidalgo, Chito Tapawan, Leo Robel (also a victim but readily volunteered to help), salamat. To all the brods from UPBSFAA and UPBSFI who extended help and offered prayers, you may not know me and I may not know most of you pero maraming salamat sa inyong lahat. Most of all, to my fellow residents who spent at least two days of their time helping us clean up instead of loading up on booze during their unexpected vacation: GP Prince Elmer Reyes, Kim Montaniel, Allan "alaska boy" Ibanez (bunso), Danilo Si, Renz "ozner" Caligua, Oliver Simon "Monsi" Tejero, Jomar Antuerpia, Joseph "joeyboy" Alvarez (who celebrated his batch birthday helping us out), and Alexis "dogz" Dogwe, maraming salamat mga brods. Ang huhusay niyong maghugas ng plato sa ga-ihing patak ng tubig!  I may have missed some names but sincerely family and I would like to thank the whole UP Beta Sigma Fraternity for the help.

It is also saddening that aside from the devastation of the typhoon, we also lost another brod and one of my idols, Mel D. Let's all join in prayer for his soul's eternal repose..

Brods, again maraming salamat. Gaya nga nung sinabi ko nung una, bagyo si Ondoy, Tabets tayo! Ang Tabets hindi sumusuko at laging masaya. Napatunayan kong muli na tama ang pinili kong favorite principal truth: "All Betans are highly enthusiastic individuals." Kidding aside, I'm glad to be alive, and most glad to be part of the legendary UP Beta Sigma.

So eto ang mga pics ng mga bagay na alam kong pagtatawanan nalang natin pagdating ng panahon. Cheers and enjoy! Tagay na brothers!

Subject: {UPBSF International} Re: Relief Center in Los Baños

Brod Ollie,

We welcome your suggestion brod. While Norms and I take pride in initiating the relief drive here in LB in partnership with the resident brods and sis', aside from the Student Council of UPLB, Rotary, etc., UPLB has finally set up its own relief center only last night at Baker Hall. Through the text message of Brod Jojo Alejar mobilizing volunteers to be at Baker Hall to sort out food, clothing and other stuff, Norms and I went there to volunteer our services. Just a few more minutes, the resident brods came led by GP Jec. The relief goods at Baker Hall is intended to flood victims of LAGUNA only. My observation was that most of the relief goods came from ABS-CBN Foundation delivered to Baker Hall through container vans. But what is lacking at this point in time during the relief operation are medicines, toiletries, tooth brush, tooth paste, bath soap, slippers, school supplies, and even underwear. Perhaps it would be a good idea to conduct a medical mission in one of the most affected barangay(s) here in LB. At this point in time, I don't know of any brod in LB affected by the flooding of Ondoy.

KEEP YOUR DONATION COMING!

Cheerz to all,

Freddy

Dear brods,

I have been following very closely what the brods have been doing as far as help is concerned for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. All I can say is this is very commendable and worthy of the highest praises.

Mid-afternoon today, I was visited by four brods at home. Ollie Jumao-as was one of them and they have been going around places where they believe some brods could have been victims themselves. They are doing this to offer financial assistance or manpower support for clearing the house of mud. Before seeing me, they went to the house of Vic Tirol and Ollie Santos at Kingsville, Antipolo. Most damaged was the house of a brod at Provident Village in Marikina where the silt is still knee-deep. I just can not remember the name of this brod in Provident.

                                             At Ric Tolentino's residence:  Ollie73, Raffy86, Ric65, Melvir02, Philip81

This whole idea and the effort in putting it into action is very touching. Although my family and I were the "lucky" ones, so to speak, the healing effect of this act is indeed laudable for those severely affected. I am sure that there are other brods in other places who were also victimized by Ondoy. Our prayers go to them and their families. I doff my hat to all those who contributed, big or small, to this worthy cause. This is a very good manifestation of the BETAN SPIRIT.

God bless to all. Let the spirit live on.

Cheers,

Ricky Tolentino

Subject: {UPBSF International} Relief Update

Brods,

We are in the final phase of Oplan Sunshine - the relief operations being conducted by the OBBF.  Today, our team leader Ollie Jumao-as 73, Philip Marfil 81, myself and Oplan Sunshine Chair Melvir Buela 02 went to Cainta, Antipolo and Marikina.

In the Town and Country Subdivision along Marcos Highway Antipolo we went to UP Dil resident Charles Co 07.  The first floor of their house had been submerged.  They are still in clean up stage and are fine.  We gave to his mother some cash assistance.

Residents in clean-up mode                                                                Much needed relief goods

Leo 95, Chito72 and Melvir02 (doing all the heavy lifting)                                      Melvir02 and Mon97

                  Melvir02, Raffy86, Leo95 and Chito72                                                          Needed cash assistance

Beta Sigma clean up crew                                                Mon has a new born and another small child

We went to Kingsville Subdivision in Cainta where Ollie Santos 65 and Vic Tirol 64.  Both the families of Ollie and Vic were fine, and were not hit hard by floods, although water did get into Vic's house.  They deferred assistance in favor of those more adversely affected.

In Provident Village where many of the fatalities of Marikina, we went thru a few kilometers of apocalyptic scenery.  Many houses had second floors but it was clear from the mud and garbage as high as their second floors, that the second floors were not a refuge. We are talking about people getting swept off their roofs here.  Through the tons of thick mud dumped by the overflowing Marikina river, we made our way to the house Raul Landingan UP Bag.  He told us how ankle-deep water suddenly turned black and rose to chest-high in less than a minute.  His family saved some of their neighbors but there were those who still got killed. Provident Village is not a poor neighborhood, but definitely there are no rich and poor there - they are all in need.

Chito72 - team leader for the day                           Ollie73, Chito72, Raffy86 and Leo95.  Wille said he lost his alak.

Raffy86 with Mrs. Nepo                                                                      Still in clean up mode

Chito72 with Nepos mud-caked vintage RR                                   Water was higher than the yellow part of the pole

Mrs. Nepo with Melvir02 and Leo95                                                       Can't have relief ops without beer

Got to save those valuable memories                              Ollie73, Chito72, Leo95, Melvir02 and the family of Nepo

Provident Village in Marikina, one of the worst hit, where more than 50 people died

We went to Sta Teresita Subd in Marikina, where we met Ric Tolentino 65 and his family.  Ric told us how they got stranded Saturday night and only his grandchildren were left at home.  He and his son returned the next day to find that water was neck-high but thankfully the rest of his family were safe in the 2nd floor.  The house was clean already but the flood had affected their drinking water and he was suffering some stomach problems as a result.  He deferred assistance but we ended up talking about old war stories of the Black Saints.

Other brods whom we talked to were affected but doing fine now.  They have deferred assistance as well.  Ben Ferriols 72, Ross Fernando 69, resident JE Juan 06 are a few.  We found out that the house of Wally Calderon 97 in San Mateo was still in thigh-high water.  He wasn't there, but texted us that he did not need assistance.

Leo95 - I lost everything but my golf clubs                                                Mrs. Robel - I don't play golf

                                  In a pensive moment                                                               Raffy86, Charles07, Melvir02

Clean-up done already                                                                 How high was the water?

Give it to your mother please                                        Raffy86 and Melvir02 still looking for Ollie Santos house

Melvir02 and team leader for the day Ollie73 looking                          Finding it!  Raffy86 and Ollie73 with Mrs. Santos

First things first, beer for Raul                                              Raffy86, Melvir02, Philip81 and Raul

Philip 81 and Melvir 02   *  At the wake of Mel68- Raffy86, Mrs. Dave dela Torre, Teps Navarro75, Chito Tapawan72, Butch Madarang75

                              Teps75 and Raffy86                                                                     Chito72, Jun63 and Badjour70

                                Dave73 and Ollie73                                                                     Ross69, Pat65, Butch75

5,000 capsules of meds from Jopet Laraya63                                Dennis86 receiving meds for distribution in affected QC areas

As mentioned, we are in our final phase of Oplan Sunshine.  We will be concluding the operations on Wednesday, giving our final assistance by then.  Any extra funds we have them will be given to an NGO - the Center for Empowerment of Communities (CEC) which is doing 7-day a week relief efforts in affected barangays of QC where more than 40 people were killed and 5,000 families affected.  Assistance in kind have been already been directed towards the CEC where brod Dennis Belmonte 86 is part of the operations. This will ensure that less money goes to overheads and operations and more money goes to relief for flood victims.  We will close our books after this and give an expense/assistance report within 3 days.  Aside from the PhP 46,231 remitted by the UPBSFI, the OBBF raised an additional PhP 42,950.

Cheers brods,

Raffy86

gud day brod..

first of all, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of brod mel. the beta sigma will surely miss him.

secondly brod, we hope that everything is well for the brods in the NCR area. we really hope na nakabangon na ang mga brods dyan lalo na si ninong nepoy. buti na lang talaga na hindi sobrang affected ang NCR by bagyong pepeng.

yesterday was the 32nd anniversary of the UPB chapter. we had a very simple yet meaningful celebration in the campus. instead of the usual pakain, we devised a scheme wherein we can involve the students in our fund raiser efforts for the ondoy victims in UPB. ginawa namin syang "donate 10 pesos and get your meal for free". we reserved one of the two canteens in the campus. instantly, the pakain was a hit. masayang masaya kami dahil within 40 minutes ay naubos agad yung pagkain sa canteen and most especially we were able to raise a fair amount of money.

also, as the fraternity's response to ondoy, we floated and stationed donation boxes all over the campus. the University student council was very thankful to us as we were able to collect 8,000 pesos from the boxes. the collections were forwarded to the usc and they will distribute them to the UPB students whose families and homes were affected.

we are really proud of what we have accomplished this week brod. and we hope that this had made the fraternity even prouder. through little ways, we showed the UPB community that Beta Sigmans are men of deep character.

as for the pictures and documentations brod, if you will allow me, i would like to send you a compilation of pictures together with our monthly financial statements by the end of this semester. sem reports as you may call them hehe.

that's all for now brod. i will update you again when we have already pushed through of the planned beta sigma sign post/screen. approved na siya by the chancellor pero we had a few setbacks as we fell a little bit short on the budget. pero hopefully ay mahabol siya by this semester. cheers brother! i hope to meet you soon. magpapakwento sana kami about the golden years of the frat noong 60's and 70's hehe.

in the spirit of service, i remain...

Subject: {UPBSF International} typhoon pepeng

dear brothers,

our country is bracing for a more powerful typhoon called Pepeng. it entered borongan, catarman, northern samar yesterday packing a center wind of 195kph expected to dain a maximum 230kph which will be categorized as a super typhoon. although expected to bring less rainfall, the already-saturated or moist soil can easily develop flash floods again to a landscape still reeling from past typhoon ondoy. the strong gustiness of wind is equally horrible if it maintains current strength since it can devastate powerlines and houses as well. landfall is expected to hit from friday evening to saturday. it's moving towards aurora northwards to isabela and cagayan but expected to be felt by metro manila and other central luzon provinces.called a meeting yesterday at ch 4 to map out a sustained public service coverage towards the weekend. we cancelled dayoffs to keep information flowing 24 hours a day. please use the power of text to advise relatives to stay indoor, buy drinking water and grocery packs and those residing at flood-prone areas to start moving to higher levels or buildings with stronger structure. all our brods are enjoined to visit or call NBN ch 4 special telecast "sagiptulong" for appropriate connection to proper agencies.

we have representatives from pcso, pagcor, and ndcc. hotlines are flashed on the screen every now and then. brods are welcome to volunteer for coordination, receive and make phone calls, and other chores that can be of help in the operation. we have student volunteers as well to support secretariat. panawagans are also welcome in this multi-sectoral marathon coverage.

brod raffy et al, please coordinate with me or visit NBN to announce and explain the fund raising and rescue efforts being done by UP Beta Sigma Fraternity to help victims. we can mention the names of the generous brothers that donated cash and kind and efforts to keep the ball rolling.

that's just for now and let's hope and pray for the best.

1.  OBBF conducted relief operations yesterday (Operation Sunshine).  Present were:

Operation Sunshine Chair Melvir Buela 02
Team Leader Chito Tapawan 72
Leo Robel 95
Philip Marfil 81
Ollie Jumao-as 73
myself

2.  We went to the residence of:

Willie Nepomunceno 69 in San Isidro Cainta
Willie and his family are doing fine.  The flooding which went as higher than 7 feet had abated.  His house which is for the most part concrete suffered only minor damage.  Of course the lost much of their things that were on the first floor.  Willie was not there when we arrived, he was out on an errand, but we talked to his wife and family and spoke with him over the phone.  Tinangay daw yung mga alak niya.  His wife said they were better off than many and the news reports on the radio and on text (the ones I reported earlier on the egroup) were a bit exaggerated.  They did not have to be picked up on the roof after 3 days without as reported.  His wife said that they were more or less ok in their 2nd floor, as they were able to bring up some supplier with them.  We dropped off 3 boxes of supplies and several gallons of water.

Mon Mamaril 97 in Vista Verde Cainta
Mon was in relatively good spirits as all good Betans are.  His family was in one of the hardest hit areas.  Mon told us of hearing screams and then eerie silence, and of bodies floating with the rushing water.  Many died at Vista Verde.  It was a pretty big subdivision and everywhere there were houses gutted by the flood.  We got there and Mon's house had been devastated.  It was no longer livable, and his family and a handful of residents were trying to salvage what they could and clean up the mud with only trickles of water running from the faucet if any at all.  Mon is living with Brod Alex Bermas 97 and his family right now but will move when stable.  We gave him 3 boxes of supplies and cash.

Leo Robel 95 in Greenpark Pasig
Leo joined us in the operations.  His house was totaled and is no longer livable.  He lost nearly everything.  He was able to salvage some clothes and his golf clubs.  He is staying at a relatives house but will not return to his house. Probably he will try to sell it.  He has practically finished his clean-up so not needing supplies, we gave him cash.

3.  We saw the devastation of Pasig and Cainta.  And we didn't even penetrate the slums.  After we help the brods, I am sure with the money being raised that there will be left over.  We must help others. Ollie also strongly suggests this.   We are limited however both in resources and manpower to conduct significant relief operations.  So unless we raise even more funds we will end up donating it to other groups operating already.  This isn't bad either.  The only question is how or who to give these resources to.

I know the brods in the US have been saying this is ground zero so they will trust in our judgment how to use the money raised.  But I think that once the money is spent, only then will people disagree.  So to prevent monday morning quarterbacking (sorry sorry if I have to say this), it is best if you all tell us how to use your donations (AFTER we ATTEND TO THE BRODS) or even how much should be allocated to each brod.  If donating it to another charity/relief organization- what org/s?  Do we donate in cash or purchase goods?

4.  Talked with Poti Aparato 77 of the Secretariat of the UPBSFAA.  We will meet later to coordinate efforts, along with Melvir 02 and Dennis Belmonte 86 who is active in QC relief operations.  So UPBSFAA has also raised funds and clothing.  Poti also wants to talk about how we will move forward and what king of relief plan we are talking about.

5.  Talked to Brod Ted Topacio 49.  He left money with the UPBSFAA including some earmarked for Nepo.

6.  So far we used around P31,000 mostly raised or abono from the OBBF.  Haven't drawn down yet on the monies from the US yet.

Cheers.. Raffy86

Brod Pa Ollie'73c upd, was stranded in Los Banos for 2 nights (Sat-Mon AM) Sept26-28. LB Brods had just celebrated the 2nd year of T.Kalimasada in UPLB which Ollie put up and little did everyone know the extent to-be of the flooding.

Ollie stayed at  the well kept Paciano Rizal Shrine (house of Paciano till he died in 1930) beside the LB Municipal Townhall where we had our Kalimasada.Three other TK practitioners were stranded with him (all from Cainta/Antipolo).

The TK Brods of LB kept him company and together monitored the status of "Ondoy" ..

  FreddyFajardo'64and sis wife Norma,

  Conrado'kuya'Domingo'64 upd &sis wife Lorna,

  Douglas Mondonedo'65,

  Wow Protacio'74 &wife Marissa,

  Ambo Lapis'80,

  Frankie Colanta'55&sis wife Connie.

The Sunday food was complemented with large pcs of inihaw na Bangus" harvested" (Php60pesos/kg) from the typhoon-damaged fish pens of Laguna Lake. Extra t-shirts for Ollie's group were provided for by Ric Escobin'79. It became potluck time & joketime as LB brods tried to lift the spirits of those stranded with Ollie, as they worried for their families.

Ollie managed to return to his home in Cainta by late afternoon Monday after leaving Los Banos around 6am.He then proceeded to immediately organize help teams for other victims.

Subject: {UPBSF International} Collection Center in Los Baños

For the information of everyone, the resident brods and sis' in partnership with the Philippine Australian Alumni Association (Sis Norms as president) has put up a collection center for donations intended to flood victims of "Ondoy". It was established only yesterday and donations are starting to come in. The center badly needs volunteers to sort out clothing and other stuff and repacking of food stuff to be given to affected areas along the coastal barangays of LB especially in barangay Tadlac and to other areas in Metro Manila.

The collection center is located at Bistro LB along Lopez Avenue, Batong Malake, Los Baños, Laguna.

We welcome donations in the form of clothing, bedding, rice, canned goods, mineral water, medicine, and cash.

Let us share our blessings and bring relief to our disaster stricken kababayans.

Subject: {UPBSF International} typhoon ondoy

dear brods,

sorry for a late update. we have been busy trying to do my part in the last few days after the big flood. typhoon ondoy hit central luzon last saturday starting early morning and with increasing might towards the afternoon till late evening. hardest hit were metro manila, bulacan, cavite and pampanga. unprecedented inches of relentless rainfall poured for several hours catching everyone by surprise. fast swelling of rivers and arteries and tributaries contributed to the chaos that followed. the whole metro manila was on a standstill, motorists caught in a gridlock as water rapidly rose to an alarming level. as we were hit by four consecutive typhoons before this - the scientists attributed the flood to the almost nil or dysfunctional absorption capability of the soil underneath doublly made worse by the inexplicabe and immensely thick downpour. drainage and canals filled up easily as well as the pasig river that interconnects to several waterways and creeks. parked cars started to float, bumped each other or against walls. commuters left the buses and cars and waded to reach safer grounds; residents started moving to elevated portions of their houses, some reached the roofs as the only safe sanctuary. cellphone networks clogged with heavy traffic as pedestrians, residents, office workers attempted to call or text each other; all metro manila streets froze and was a huge parking lot.

"ok ba kayo dyan?" "kumusta si baby/" "naiakyat ba si lola sa second floor?" "kumain na ba kasyo?" nainom na ba gamot ni tatay?", "nakauwi na ba si junior from the school?" "lumikas na kayo!" "stranded kami!" "walang kuryente dito!" "'tay, lubog na yung kotse natin" these are the kind of calls and messages that plagued both globe and smart cellsites. houses and shanties near the rivers started to crumble and join the traffic of the debris afloat being carried harshly by the rampaging floodwaters.

-- saturday
i was immobilized and had no choice but to stay indoor that fateful saturday tuned tn to radio broadcasts to gather information as to what is happening everywhere. power outages started started as safety precaution by meralco to prevent fire or any electrocution incidents. heavy rains partnered with heavy winds continue to pound for six to eight hours NON-STOP. i decided to cancel regular programming at channel 4 and mount an emergency broadcast as an instrument to help distressed victims of the ongoing catastrophie. this time, our employees usually trained to mount special coverages for public service failed to show up at the station as they were now the victims themselves. under this situation, with a handful of staff, went on air in less that an hour. a national emergency was called and all departments and agencies went into action - NDCC (national disaster coordinating council) AFP, PNP, DENR, coast guard, phil navy, department of social welfare and development, MMDA, red cross, department of health were activated and started a massive rescue and relief operations. initial difficulties was reaching the flood victims - the monstrous traffic jam created earlier disrupted the deployments movement to reach the affected areas. plan to fly helicopters was cancelled due to zero visibility.

affected metro manila cities were marikina, cainta, pasig, caloocan, quezon city, malabon and navotas. provinces: - bulacan, pampanga, and cavite. in bulacan, meycauayan, marilao, sta. marilao and bocaue were hard hit.

heavy rains plus water release from angat dam and ipo dam contributed to this unusually high level of water - the worst in bulacan's history.

our barangay - sta. clara was flooded as well reaching an enormously destructive level. people were swimming around the new waltermart mall or "lampas-tao" considering sta. maria as historically "flood free" as compared to bocaue, marilao and meycauayan - you can just imagine the levels that existed in these towns.

we had no choice but to be at the mercy of the elements - we had to wait for the rains to stop and waters to subside.. attempts were made succesfully by local barangays, local police and local government units with civic groups and concerned citizens to save and help our distressed countrymen. mayors allocated safe havens as temporary shelters, relief centers were pinpointed.
the rains weakened by around 11pm and flood started to subside since then.

-- sunday
i had to pick up my parents in bagbaguin and brought them to my place at around 2:30 am sunday morning. by 5am i was deploying and coordinating with the station for the day's broadcast plan. by, 7am, i drove to our station in quezon city and started to mobilize people for the day's coverage. sent our eng vans to NDCC and marikina. i want the next 5 days to devote the station's time to public service.

rescue and relief operations are now in full motion. clothings, medicine, warm food, rice and blankers made their way already to
recipients. donations are overwhelmingly heartwarmingly abundant.

it's 4am monday. i just arrived home at around 2:30 am. had a nap and started browsing my emails as i write this posting for everyone.

will proceed to NDCC later at 7am for our situation briefers and assesments. presided by the president on a daily basis.

got a text message from brod raffy the list of brods in distress including brod willie nep. i texted brod raffy back to ask for specifics. raffy texted their locations and i immediately called up sis reggie uriarte (a sigma betan), general manager of PCSO to facilitate this urgent request for help. sis reggie responded quickly, coordinated with proper authorities. glad to know that our brods are safe now.

-- monday

with so many fund raising efforts going on, we thought another one won't hurt using NBN ch 4. we met morning of monday and decided to mount a giant telethon, a different one not using entertainers but using "real, honest to goodness conglomerate of mixed people composed of educators, priests, religious groups, businessmen, NGO's, student-volunteers, teachers, musicians, or anybody "nameless" who would work 24 hours to serve and help anyone. by 7pm - we launch NBN "sagip-tulong" telethon and the response was immense and heart-warming. we channeled all funds to CARITAS account.

In its second day - we gathered a whooping PHP 105 M!

kudos to local brods raffy, butch m, rico a, angie a, and others at UPBSAA who quickly responded!

my gratitude to up beta sigma international and other chapters for their generosity!

Truly -  Beta Sigma Fraternity is ONE and NUMBER ONE!

(our family is safe and sound and i hope for the best this coming week.  i pray that our brods will recover and move on after this
devastating tragedy. God Bless!)

PS

in the middle of all these, my brod rod reyes (also a Betan) is here in RP having a dialysis three times week. we found a donor and underwent all the tests and fortunately, found a match. we checked in at National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) yesterday and the transplant will be this friday. need your prayers brothers. salamat po.

my best to all,

Brod Willie, Raffy and Brods,

I was able to get in touch with Brods Rico, Raffy and Butch re the fund drive. The UPBSFAA has arleady started the drive and has collected some amounts. I told Butch or Brod Poti to see me tomorrow and I will give my cash donation for the victims and affected brods. I am particularly concerned with the needs of Brod Willie Nep whose family was stranded for 3 days without food and water. I was told that they are now back but their house is still under water! Can we please give more consideration for Brod Willie? I was trying to get in touch with him by cell phone but no success. The land lines in Cainta are still out of order. I hope they are alright. Of course there are other numerous flood victims and other brods affected also. I hope the UPBSFAA will also take into consideration those brods.

We will contihue to pray for the affected brods and the other flood victims to be able to cope up with this calamitous events.

Fraternally,

Brod Topacio, Jr. '49

An update.

Ollie73 and his family are safe but I dont know about his house.  I hear his area is submerged in water.

Mon Mamaril 97 as of 6PM last night still has not been rescued.  His family (with one small child and one infant) along with 3 other families are still trapped in their residence in Marikina.  Waters still very high around their house but at least not rising.

Leo Robel 95 and his family are safe but their house is still in water.

I heard Wille Nep 69 was trapped somewhere with his son and asking to be picked up be rescuers.  A brod told me he heard that on the radio.

Jerry Bongco 94, Jay Policarpio 88, Mino Espartero 93 and Berns Palang 86 are in Taguig with their families and safe on high ground.

Cell phone communications still difficult.  Relief continues but the scale of this disaster is enormous.

I suppose besides money/ food/water/medicine some brods and their families will need clothing and shelter.

Has the UPBSFAA mobilized?  It would be good to coordinate with them.

Brods,

In this WORST-THAN-KATRINA situation as Brod Raffy describes, I guess we are duty bound as noble men to make some personal sacrifices in order to help our brothers in need. I am aware that this is outside of our vision and mission but this is a RARE SITUATION where we could go beyond our usual boundaries.

It may personally entail just a bit of sacrifice for many of us (like postponing a golf game, or a meal at a restaurant, or buying a luxury item, or downsizing an expensive gift).

I will await for pledges (small or big amounts) and I will advance the monies from my personal account. (Pay me later na lang. Let's not use UPBSFI money.) I am now requesting Brod Dan Lachica to exercise special audit functions for this occasions to see to it that all expenses are above board, and that all donations are appropriately received.

Some of our Philippine-based younger alumni brods have already responded to Raffy. I hope that you will spare some time this weekend to read your emails so you could respond to this RARE SITUATION, which is actually a good opportunity for us to respond to a worthy need. As Raffy has described, he has seen the best in the Filipino including those in Manila.

Let the best in us come out, too.

May all the good things we do come back to us in mysterious ways. And even without that, charity for a very worthy cause such as this is always a good and noble act.

With a servant's heart,

Willie "Tatang" Vergara

Subject: {UPBSF International} Floods in Metro Manila

The Philippines was hit by record rainfall yesterday from a storm. 4 times the previous record in 1967.  344 mm of rain in only 6 hours. Much of Metro Manila is submerged especially in the Pasig, Marikina, Cainta, Taguig areas as well as some areas in Malabon, Caloocan and QC.  Flood waters reached the 3rd floor of the UERM hospital and many private subdivsions were hit hard, their cars swept away, flood waters reaching the 2nd floor, people on roofs of their house.  -- Overflowing dams released water.  Many have perished already.

As expected the Philippines was ill-prepared.  There was no warning of the magnitude of this meteorlogical phenomenon, and thus people were at the offices, schools and on the road when it hit trapping many commuters and submerging many vehicles.  The traffic jam of people rushing to get home, hampered immediate rescue attempts even as disaster resources are limited.

I have not heard yet from the brods who live in the Pasig and Cainta areas like Ollie, Jerry Bongco, Leo Robel (last I heard of him he was abandoning his house as it was filling with water).  Cell phone connections are difficult.

My own family wasnt spared either.  My 76 year old parents were caught by the flood along South Luzon Expressway. Their car stalled, and within seconds of leaving their car it was submerged.  They made their way on foot in neck-high waters to higher ground where they huddled with a few other people in the high wind in a roadside restroom.  I made my way to them from Pasig but my car didnt get very far as the roads were blocked by a tangle of cars and flood.  I parked the car along C5, made my way on foot thru waist high flood in taguig, where i met up with my parents who abandoned the shelter and began wading towards me from several km away. I was finally able to drive the 2 home thru flood, only to find our that floods had got into the 1st floor of their house.  My house in Pasig fortunately was spared.

The good thing that I saw, both in actual circumstances and on TV is that during disasters such as this the Filipino pulls together. People were helping others survive. 3 different people gave a change of clothes to my father without him asking.  People were helping others standed by flood instead of just attending to their own safety.  People would go back and find their relatives and friends to rescue them. People found ways to deal with the situation.  Filipinos know how to help themselves.  They know how to survive.  Makeshift rafts from barrels, old sofas, you name it.  Everywhere there were safetly lines fixed to help peopl cross waters. The government (today) was in the thick of things.  From what Im seeing on TV, it was so different from the New Orleans disaster, where people just waited to die or were just overcome. And the US government was so slow to help despite the tremendous resources.

My call is to help those that were hit hard.  Brods or otherwise.

Raffy86
